Review: Black Scars (Blood Skies Book 2) By Steven Montano

Synopsis and cover from Goodreads:

"Something ancient has awoken. Primordial and wholly evil, a living shadow emerges from a prison made weak by the magical cataclysm called The Black. Now the Sleeper stalks the land in search of its old enemies, leaving a trail of madness and destruction in its wake. Eric Cross, a Southern Claw warlock, has been sent to find the Woman in the Ice, the only known means to stopping this evil. Aided by a grizzled ranger and a band of wardens and inmates from a sadistic prison, Cross' mission will bring him into conflict with an array of foes: the barbaric Gorgoloth, vampire shock troops out of the Ebon Cities, and a cadre of mercenary nihilists called the Black Circle. On a mission that will take him from a lost temple once ruled by insidious wolf sorcerers to the vicious gladiator games of the vampire city-state of Krul to the deadly ruins of an ice city, Cross will play a pivotal role in an ancient conflict whose outcome will determine the future of the world. Return to the world of Blood Skies in this exciting military fantasy adventure!"

Goodreads Kindle Kindle

I read this book as part of the Blood Skies Omnibus Volume 1. Which was a gift from Steven Montano.

My Review:

I'm giving Black Scars a Strong 6 out of 5. Thats how much I like it. I've continued to start on book 3 Soulrazor before I'd even written this review!

Once again the world is still at war and Cross is still caught in the thick of it.With a new but ancient evil; The Sleeper; threatening to awake, Cross and a group of mismatched mercenaries are in a race against time to get to the Ice Ruins to find the one thing that can stop this newly awoken ancient evil. However, Cross soon finds that he has become the new target for The Sleeper. Will they find the Woman in the Ice before The Sleeper finds them? Cross is one again forced to go places and do things that He never thought he would. His skills as a warlock and a warrior are once again put to the test and his limits are pushed even further.

Mr Montano' writing style is once again amazing, as I found myself drawn in from the start. The descriptions are detailed enough that I can imagine myself being there in the story seeing and feeling everything! The setting and the characters have grown and progressed; ruined earth has been given extra depth, characters are bigger than ever, and the shadows are darker than before!

I definitely recommend reading The Blood Skies books and would highly recommend reading them in order too.

Favourite Quotes:

"There was a body on the ground in front of them, and it was still moving. Greasy innards dangled from the waist where the legs had been torn away from the torso. Thick chains still attached to the bulkhead, held the severed limbs a few yards away."
Loc 4973 Kindle.

"Cross looked at the vampires in the crowd, and they were as stoic and as still as wax statues. They had deep eyes like pits and moon-pale faces. Lips drew back to reveal grey fangs dripping dark venoms."

Review: Demon Restrained By Kelly Apple

Synopsis and Cover From Goodreads.

"Bas wants out.

Held captive by a crazed Alpha, demon Bastael hates all those he’s come across on the mortal plane. When a damaged werewolf falls into his path, he’s determined to use her and find a way to escape.

Evie wants to be safe.

Abused by her Pack and afraid for her life, Evie hides in the dark corners of the basement. The demon that’s already down there? He’s better than the Alpha upstairs.

But neither of them expects the connection that sets them both on fire.

With the Alpha’s lust for power escalating, Bas and Evie will have to find a way to break free or die trying.

Warning: This book contains one cocky demon and one werewolf who’s stronger than she looks. That’s right, folks… If the basement is a rockin’, don’t come a knockin’!"

My Review: 5*.

Kelly has written this book really well and it doesn't read as though it's her debut novel. The book tells the romantic and passionate story of Bas; a demon imprisoned by an Alpha Werewolf; and Evie; an abused and neglected girl who has learned to melt into the shadows to avoid being found.

Evie begins to visit Bas and brings him food and water so that he doesn't die. What Bas really needs though is fresh blood to give him the strength and power to break free of his magical prison. Over time Bas and Evie build a friendship and a bond which gives Bas the hope that he may be able to escape the torturous Alpha Were yet.

Bas is the first Demon I've encountered that seems to have a softer side, and Evie manages to break through his Big, Bad exterior and find this softer side!

I was captivated right from the start, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot wait for book 2!

Review: Joe Vampire: The Afterlife By Steven Luna

Synopsis and Cover from Goodreads:

"So…yeah. It’s me again. America’s most sarcastic vampire.

I’m back on the blog. It’s been a while – about a year, if we need to get into specifics. Which I usually do. It’s just a thing with me.

A lot has happened since we last chatted – some good, some bad. All worthwhile, in the grand scheme. I’ve dealt with the whole Living Dead thing long enough now to know how to keep it from taking over my life. What I’m still figuring out is how to keep it from wreaking havoc on everyone else’s lives. It’s a roller coaster, for sure, but I’m convinced that waiting for me somewhere on the other side of the Other Side is a real-life life, not just some artificially-sweetened half-life substitute. I want a family. I want my music.

I want the dream come true, not the dream fell through.

And I’m determined to have it, regardless of how eternal this afterlife thing might be. But it’s a hell of a lot to keep track of. Barring any unforeseen developments that might undo all my vampirosity, I may have to grow up a little in order to get it all to work out. I’m ready for that, though.

As fun as it might seem to hang with the Lost Boys, I can’t be Peter Pan-pire forever."

My Review:

I give this book a big 5 out of 5, a must read.
I once again found that I couldn't put this book down, I had to keep reading even if that meant walking around my house with my ereader, so I did just that!
My favourite sarcastic, snarky vampire has re-opened his blog!
Once again Steven Luna' writing is fantastic and I am still drawn into the story from the start. The sarcasm, metaphors, puns and oversharing are all present. There is more sarcasm from Joe and there is more trouble brewing too for both Joe and the people he loves.
Steven Luna has done a great job of making the characters grow and develop especially with Joe and Hube. Both Joe and Hube find themselves facing new challenges that take them down some very different paths. Joe finds that once again he his faced with all sorts of problems both human and vampire related.
Again the way the book is written still made me think that it was real and being written by a vampire (yes, I know, vampires don't exist).

I can't wait for the next instalment to see just what Steven Luna and life have in store for Joe and his nearest and dearest.

My Favourite Quote (location 2934, kindle)

"She was a regular fucking Vamptopussy, this one."

This is my favourite quote purely because it made me laugh so much; probably just my sense of humour! Also when I read this I was sat in my Local car dealership showroom waiting for my car and I burst out laughing, I looked up only to find that EVERYONE was staring at me!

My honest opinion is that both the Joe Vampire books are definitely worth a read and I would recommend them; I already have to a couple of my friends!

Review: Passion, Power and Sin By Mike Wells

Synopsis and cover from goodreads:

This is Book 1 of the 5 book series.

"One spectacular financial scheme. One woman alone against the world. Young, beautiful, and yearning for love, Heather Bancroft meets the "perfect" man...and is lured into a game in which she begins to make more money than she ever imagined. Betrayed by her own innocence, she loses all that is dear to her and discovers that she has been mercilessly used. Defeated and broken, but surviving with sheer persistence and ingenuity, Heather emerges from her trying ordeal, determined to punish the ruthless man who destroyed her life. Her thirst for revenge takes her halfway around the globe, to the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, where her nemesis secludes himself in obscene wealth that he's gained from the financial ruin of others. Heather is playing for the highest stakes in a lethal game. Only one man loves her - he's handsome, confident, and just as determined as she is. Only one man can stop her - a criminal mastermind who is intent on her destruction."

I have only read book 1 of the 5 so my review is only of part of the story. I will post a full review after completing all 5 books, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later!
The story starts in the Mediterranean, on board an expensive ($300 million) luxury yacht; owned by the Venezuelan reclusive billionaire Ricardo Maya, who pulls off a $353 million scam.
Then we jump to New York City 5 months later, and meet Heather Bancroft. A 24 year old PR assistant, who is desperately trying to raise $200, 000 to keep hers and her mothers family home.
Heather suddenly begins receiving mysterious emails containing information about future events that can be bet on. Should Heather take any notice, should she gamble with what little money she has or even with her future?
Heather finds herself doing things that she probably never dreamed she'd do; like lying to those she loves, and flying to Tokyo and dealing with the Yakuza (Japanese Mafia).
The book is well written with some great characters.
As much as this is not my usual type of book (mainly due to the lack of vampires or blood and gore), I have found it to be a very gripping storyline that kept me turning the pages and had left me wanting more, needing to know what happens next. I can't wait to continue reading the remaining books!

Review: Joe Vampire By Steven Luna

Cover and synopsis from Amazon:

"Hey, folks. I’m Joe, and I’m a vampire – not by choice, mind you, but by accident…a fate-twisting, fang-creating, blood lust-inducing misunderstanding.

It started with a group date, a case of mistaken identity and far too many sake bombers, and ended with a ridiculous set of circumstances that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around.

Maybe you can tell: I’m not real happy about it. But I’m certainly not going to let it get in the way of my life.

So I’ve thrown my ranting into a blog. I’m hanging out my dirty laundry in an effort to explain the real deal about being a card-carrying member of the Undead Elite. Maybe it will help others understand the truth about vampires. Believe me, it’s not all satin capes and naked ladies…none of it is, actually. Instead, it’s just one nasty little surprise after another. The truth bears exposing, and I’m pulling back the curtain on all of it. If I can figure out how to keep it from mowing me over in the process, then that’s groovy, too.

And that thing about vampires sparkling in the sun?

That is a bunch of bull."

Until I read Songs From The Phenomenal Nothing, I had never read any of the books written by Steven Luna. I got to read Songs From The Phenomenal Nothing as part of the ARC. I therefore told Steven Luna that I had not read any of his previous books and He was Awesome enough to gift a copy of both Joe Vampire books to me! Totally Awesome!!!

So now I've read Joe Vampire and I have to give it 5 stars out of 5 stars. The book is so cool. I thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't wait to start book 2.

Steven Luna has done a fantastic job of writing this book and I was drawn in from the start.
I honestly thought that I was reading a blog of a real Vampire;  even though Vampires don't exist; Or do they??!
The book has sarcasm, metaphors and puns throughout, it's packed with laugh out loud moments too. There are even times when Joe over shares some details; I can't quote them for spoiler reasons.
I love the way that Steven Luna makes you feel completely immersed in the events as your reading. And how He makes Joe Vampire have to deal with both human and Vampire problems too.

My Favourite Quote (location 2592, Kindle):
"Megan and I had more in common that just music:
• She likes reading; I've heard of books.
• She's studying fashion design; I wear clothes.
• She volunteers at an animal shelter; I eat animals.
The similarities were uncanny. "

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and immediately started reading the second book:
Joe Vampire The Afterlife.
