Review: Into The Darkness by Kira Adams

*Cover and Synopsis from Goodreads
~Synopsis~

It was supposed to be a way to end the devastation in the Middle East, but instead a darkness is unleashed unlike anything the world has ever seen before.

Ike Glass is well versed in chaos, but even he is unprepared for what the world will become after the outbreak. Ace Cullen has been loyal to his country ever since he was brought to the states as a young boy, but it’s difficult to stand by a country that can’t even take responsibility for their own actions. Phoenix Blue just wants a night of mindless sex… is that too much to ask? Always a black sheep, she shocks everyone as she finds the strength inside herself to protect the ones she cares about, and fight to see another day. They were strangers when the virus took over, but tragedy will bring them together in ways they never thought possible as they descend into the darkness.

~My 4.8* Review~

Disclaimer- I was given an e-book copy of Into The Darkness by the author in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

In the past I've had a bad experience with zombie books so I tend to stay clear of them, but... I'm really glad I gave Into The Darkness a chance. Why? Because it is a really good book and I have loved each and every page.

So it's fair to say that even though I received this as an e-ARC I was still a little skeptical as to what it would be like. I was sucked in and hooked all the way through. I seriously had trouble putting my kindle/phone down and walking away from it.

The zombie outbreak is the result of a research experiment gone wrong! What was supposed to be a controlled outbreak has in a matter of days gotten seriously out of hand and changed things as we know them.

Ike and Ace are there at the start and they witness the start of the outbreak. Ike escapes the facility and comes across Phoenix. Phoenix by this time has encountered zombies and has made some very difficult and life changing decisions, which unfortunately are just the tip of the iceberg.

Ike and Phoenix head off in search of Phoenix's younger sister. On their cross country journey they come across many different challenges, they meet new people; some who can be trusted and some who can't.

Into the Darkness has plenty of action scenes, there's also tonnes of emotion, and romance too, with a whole heap of sexual tension!

Kira's writing is once more fantastic. She certainly has the knack of taking control of my thoughts and feelings. I felt like I could have reached out and touched the characters. Their emotions are conveyed well.

I did feel as though Phoenix and Ike could have been a little better developed, I felt that Phoenix was missing a back story. Ike I'm not sure how he could have been made better but I felt as though he was missing a little something and I'm a little uncertain about him. Maybe book #2 will see them grow and develop into their full potential.

Overall I have loved this book from the start and I'm intrigued as to what will happen next.

Review: Sound Of Sirens by Jen Minkman

~Synopsis~

*Cover and Synopsis from Goodreads
An ancient land protected by a Tower of Light,
its people ever tempted by Siren song,
and a girl who falls for the wrong boy.

On the island of Skylge, electricity is only for the Currents – the rich ruling class who once came from across the sea and brought the holy fire of St. Brandan to Skylge. Ever since, the light in the Brandaris Tower has protected the islanders. Heeding the Siren's call will drown your body and steal your soul, but the sacred light in the Tower will chase the merfolk away.

When Skylger girl Enna welcomes her brother back from a long sea voyage, he gives her a special present from the mainland – an electronic record only playable on a Current device. The problem is that Royce Bolton, Current heartthrob and the town’s most gifted pianist, wants it too. After she stubbornly refuses to sell the LP featuring his favorite artist, he suggests sharing the record by secretly meeting up in his private summer house. Taken aback yet thrilled, Enna agrees – and discovers that there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to Current society and the history of Skylge. Why do the Sirens tempt the islanders to give themselves up to the sea? And where does the Currents’ monopoly on electricity really come from?

While struggling with these questions, Enna begins to fall for Royce, risking everything to be with a guy who is clearly wrong for her. She will learn that the sound of Sirens isn’t the most treacherous thing out there to haunt her dreams.

(The setting of Tales of Skylge is loosely based on the Dutch island of Terschelling, or Schylge in the island’s dialect. Although the names and places in this book will sound very familiar to people living on the island, the characters and events are, of course, entirely fictitious in nature.)

~My 4.5* Review~

Disclaimer- I was given an e-copy in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

The Sound Of Sirens takes us to the island of Skylge. In the waters surrounding Skylge are the Nixen. The Nixen are merpeople who are believed to lure people to their deaths using their siren song.

There are a group of people know as either The Currents or The Elite; who claim to be protecting the Skylger's. The Currents are using the light of the Brandaris Tower to keep the Nixen's call at bay. But this comes at a price.

Enna is a Skylger girl who loves music. She also hears the Nixen's song. When Enna's brother returns home with a gift for Enna, she suddenly finds that Royce; a Current elite; takes an interest in her gift. When Enna refuses to give up or sell her present to him, Royce suggests they listen to it together; in secret of course.

Enna and Royce begin getting to know each other and they begin to get closer and closer. As their feelings for each other become stronger; the rules and differences in their two communities pose more and more problems for them.

And when Enna finds out that the Currents have been lying about the island's history Enna begins to realize that not everything is as it seems to be. Can anything be done? Will the truth come out? Is Enna and Royce's relationship doomed?

Guess you'll need to get yourself a copy and read it!!!

I have loved every page of this book. The world and characters captured my mind and held me until the end.

Enna's mind seems to be on an endless quest for answers and reason's, she's so curious that it could be classed as nosey sometimes! but she's lovely. Royce seems to be a fairly decent bloke, but knowing he's a part of the Currents makes me unsure about him. At this point he could still go either way! It'll be interesting to see what Jen has in store for him in book #2.

This is the third book by Jen that I've read and each time I'm completely captivated by her stories. No matter what mood I'm in Jen always manages to suck me into the heart of each story. Jen's writing is packed full of emotion, emotion that can be felt. The scenes are clearly described and easy to picture. The characters are realistic and life like.

Sound of Sirens is a fab start to what promises to be a fantastic series. I can't wait for book #2 to see what happens. I'm also curious to see if there will be anything from Royce's POV too.

Sound of Sirens has lots inside, theres folklore, mythology and a forbidden romance too. I really have enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Review: Lost Innocence by Simon Palmer

*Cover and Synopsis from Goodreads
~Synopsis~

Michael, an artist charged with a crime he claims he didn’t commit, and John, a self-confessed heroin smuggler, are brought together in the primitive and over-crowded prison infamously known as the BANGKOK HILTON. Michael fights for his freedom, while John, resigned to his fate, wants only to regain his dignity. Michael's grandfather, a once brilliant lawyer, is brought out of retirement and flies to Bangkok to fight a case in a city where justice is bought and sold to the highest bidder and corruption is the oil that greases the wheels in the Land of Smiles.

Running out of time and unable to find the only witness, he searches for another way to succeed in what seems a hopeless case.

Meanwhile, in order to survive the most appalling conditions in jail, Michael and John must make the best of a dire situation as they wait for their separate fates to be decided. Will justice be served or will they see out the next ten years in that hell-hole of a prison?

~My 3.8 Review~

Disclaimer- I was given a copy of Lost Innocence by the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Lost Innocence is the first part of a story set in Thailand. We join Michael in a Bangkok prison. From reading Lost Innocence I have certainly been given a lasting idea of the lives these inmates endured within the prison.

We learn that Michael is there due to a claim that he has raped and beaten an underage Thai girl. Michael says that he was only sketching the girl, and he remembers her leading him to his bed where he fell asleep without touching the girl.

Michael's options are slim, he can pay a substantial amount of money to be released or he can stay in prison and await a trial. Michael chooses to stay in prison and fight the charges; which leads to his father and grandfather coming out to Thailand too.

Can they prove Michael's innocence?

This is my first book by Simon that I've read and the first on this subject. After talking to Simon on Facebook I was intrigued and decided to try it. I have enjoyed reading something so different. The book was full of details and this helped me to picture the scenes in my own head.

Simon has done a grand job of transporting me into the heart of this story. I can honestly say that I felt as though I was experiencing the hell of prison with Michael.

Michael's father; Stan, and Grandfather; Nigel, appear to have a strained relationship but I'm unsure why; maybe this needs a little bit of a back-story; unless its in part 2.

There is also some swapping between first and third person narrative which doesn't quite work for me personally, especially as the first person tends to be Michael who is stuck in prison, so isn't the main character all the way through.

Simon has paid attention to detail throughout and his descriptions of some events are detailed and in-depth. Aside from my uncertainty over Stan and Nigel's relationship and the first/third person narrative, this is a good book and a really good place to start.

I have enjoyed reading Lost Innocence and I will read the next installment to see how things pan out for Michael.

~About The Author~

Simon Palmer is a screen-play writer and author who currently resides in Bangkok. He spent months researching his debut novel and visiting the 'Bangkok Hilton' where he met Mitchell Blake, an Australian inmate who was serving a life sentence for smuggling drugs.

Mitchell advised Simon to dig deeper into the conditions of the prison and shared with him the darker sides of life inside the 'Bangkok Hilton.'

But this debut novel is not just a story of life inside the prison. It also shares experiences of what goes on in Bangkok; on the streets and the corruption of the Thai police.

~My 5* Review~

It feels like I've been waiting for ages for this book! And then I was given a copy to review honestly and here we are. I've read it and spent no less than 5 days trying to write my review, trying to put my thoughts and feelings into words!

Throughout this series I've always been #TeamDaniel and even after reading Releasing Kate I'm still #TeamDaniel. That said I also think he's being a stubborn ass and needs a slap!!! ;)

This series so far has been one huge emotional roller coaster, and that roller coaster isn't over yet!

I made the mistake of attempting to read some of Releasing Kate whilst on my break at work, I only did this once though, why? because I could have cried my eyes out (not a good look in front of your work colleagues)!

In Releasing Kate we see another side of Michael, a side that almost makes me want to turn to #TeamMichael. But Daniel too shows another side; which at the right time is H.O.T, but at the wrong time makes him look like an ass!!

I really do feel for all the characters in this book. I can feel their happiness, hurt, anger, pain and emotional turmoil too. The way in which their emotions and feelings come across make me feel as though I can understand how hard it must be for Kate to try and decide between Daniel and Michael. There are moments when Kate says or does something which makes me think that she already knows who she wants to be with but she doesn't want to hurt the other one. I really want to know what she writes in her journal too!! Who will she pick? (who would you pick?)

Dee has kept everything real, there are times when I've wondered if this is based on a true life experience! The multiple POV's have the potential to be confusing, however they're not as Dee clearly states who's POV we're reading.

The way Dee writes pulled me into the heart of everything, I always felt like I was there with the characters; never on the outside looking in. The level of emotion throughout the book is off the charts. Reading the other book in this series have all chipped away at my heart but Releasing Kate has shredded it completely!

This is another great book in an even greater series! If you haven't read this series/book yet then I recommend grabbing yourself a copy along with a cuppa, make yourself comfy and then lose yourself to Kate, Jess, Michael, Daniel, Connor and Marc!

A huge 5* from little ole me!

P.S. Dee c'mon where's the next book? I'm dying over here!! ;)

~Excerpt~

“You can take whatever you need from me. All I have is yours.” Theo spoke softly with no hint of his normally cocky attitude.
“When did you become the gentleman?”
“You miss the rogue?  Hold on, I’ll get him.”
“I do love a good rake. One who can take me in his arms and….”
He did just that.
I almost squealed in surprise but his lips met mine, swallowing the sound before it could escape. This was what I’d been hoping for. Now that we were alone. Sort of. He carried me over to the porch of an abandoned home and set me down roughly on the half wall. Pulling back long enough to pierce me with his gorgeous eyes, Theo said something that sounded like “too much clothes,” but it was garbled in a possessive growl. He spread my knees apart and filled the gap with his body. Arms wrapped around me, pulling me into his tight chest. He rooted around the sensitive spots on my neck until he found his home. The same spot he’d pierced before was again his. Teeth biting into my flesh might normally make me cry out in pain but this had me melting against the firmness of his body. Just a sip, that was all he took, but it was enough to light a fire within me that brought out a beast I had not yet met.
“Take off your pants, or mine, or both… no more waiting.” I feverishly moaned.
“Naughty… I like it.” He reached for the belt on my pants. Impatiently, I tried to undo his but our hands clumsily ran into each other.
“I could just rip them off.” He joked.
“Then I’d have nothing to wear.”
“And that’s a problem… why?”
“Marcel would get a free show…”
“Good point. No one see’s my goods but me.” He finally removed the belt and yanked up my tunic over my head. Momentarily victorious, he frowned seeing the under corset I wore, but that disappointment did not hold for long. “How many damn buttons does that thing have?” I laughed. “At least it’s not a lace up.”
Theo grumbled for a moment and dove at the buttons.
“Theo?” A strange voice called from behind him. A girl by the sound of it though I couldn’t see with his body taking up all my view.
Both of us took a breath in unison. Our alone time ruined. Would we ever get the chance to...

~My Review~

Disclaimer- I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Perfect Match introduces us to Noelle and her best friend Jackson (JJ). At the start they are merely 14 years old. They have been friends forever and they do almost everything together.

Noelle trusts JJ; until one day he lets her fall! The reason is they are playing together but Noelle's older sister walks by and JJ looks away from Noelle and he fails to catch her. Noelle screams at JJ that she hates him. Then she goes with her dad to get cleaned up.

Then we catch up with Noelle and Jackson when they are all grown up.

As adults both Noelle and Jackson seem to be where they want to be. Noelle has just landed the job she wants working with he dad. Jackson has made it as a pro wrestler (like his father). Noelle however has done one thing in her life that now threatens to resurface and has the potential to cause some serious trouble for her. Jackson on the other hand is determined to break the one rule that all the wrestlers at the school have been told. Will breaking the rule pay off or backfire on him?

I have loved reading this book, every page had me itching to find out more!!

Noelle grew up following two main rules. One from her mother: "Never trust a man who will look at another woman while he is in your presence". The second from her father: "No dating wrestlers". Her mother's rule is the reason she hasn't seen Jackson for so long, and is one rule Noelle has never broken. Her father's rule she has broken once and is hoping that her father will never find out.

Jackson bumps into a woman in a bar and nicknames her "Scout", they get on great and there is some serious chemistry between them, that said Jackson decides that he'd rather get to know Scout than have her as another one off encounter. As a pro wrestler at Noelle's dad's school Jackson knows the rule he instill's in all the wrestlers that none of them are to go near his daughter's. So you can imagine Jackson's surprise when "Scout" walks in to begin working there, and she is introduced as Noelle!!!

I loved these characters, they are realistic and believable. They are both very likable as are majority of the characters. There are a few characters that are a little less likable, but only because they are portrayed as the baddies in the story. Even the baddies are good; well written and realistic and they definitely bring some spice to the story!!

Kelly's writing style is fab; it's informative and emotional. There are plenty of details to keep the reader engaged and interested. I think this is a great debut novel and I'm excited to see what Kelly has in store in her next novel.

I'm really pleased to have been given a chance to read this fab author's work! I'm definitely looking forward to my next encounter with Kelly's work.

~About The Author~

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and can never imagine living anywhere else. I have been married for 13 years and have a beautiful creative 8 year old. I have been writing since I could put sentences together. I always thought that I would go the traditional route of publishing, and once I discovered the Indie world, I got hooked.

I am inspired everyday by people, music and other books. I love it when a book I read stays with me long after I read it. If one of my books can do that for one other person, that will make me happy.

Perfect Match is my debut novel. It's about a woman learning to let go of her past and trust in what her future can bring.

Excerpt

“Listen, kid, I don’t care what you believe in. It’s not for me to say what’s true and untrue, real or unreal. My assignment was you. You get to be one of us, if you want it. Otherwise, you move on, life is over, kaput.” Ophelia backed away from the stranger. For the first time, she realized she didn’t feel cold and wasn’t shivering. Is this what being dead was like? “One of you?” “A grim reaper.” He held out his hand to properly introduce himself. “Edon Montgomery, head reaper and old soul.”

Meet the Characters

Ophelia Dacre

The princess and heir to the throne, Ophelia witnessed her mother’s murder as a young child. Barely seventeen, she is a hopeless romantic at heart. Ophelia has fallen in love with Larkin, a commoner. Although she knew it’s against her fathers wishes, she continues to see her boyfriend in secret. Ophelia is passionate, cunning, and would do anything for her young sister Mara.

Leila Bele

Formerly Ophelia Dacre, Leila is the newest reaper and has trouble following the rules. She missed her life as a princess, and has trouble staying away from those she left behind.

Wynter Gael

A grim reaper and constant rule breaker. Wynter enjoys Leila’s company. His roommate and best friend, Jasper, keeps him in line.

Mara Dacre

Princess and younger sister to Ophelia, Mara is just fourteen years old. Full of love toward Ophelia, Mara will stop at nothing to know the truth about how her sister died, and who murdered her.

Larkin Alis

Not of royal blood, unbeknownst to him, Larkin was courting Princess Ophelia up until her murder. He is a suspect in her brutal slaying.

Edon Montgomery

Head reaper and considered an old soul, Edon’s job is to keep the other reapers in line. Tough but fair, Edon is always watching and fixing reaper mistakes. Although, he has a few secrets of his own.

Jasper Ehlers

A fellow reaper and best friend to Wynter, Jasper has been in love with Violetta for decades. He’s a romantic, constantly wooing Violetta through the decades, hoping to one day win over her heart.

Violetta Mercier

A grim reaper and roommate of Emblyn. Violetta is cheeky, dark, and quite often mysterious at first introduction. She loves to tease others and enjoys the thrill of being pursued by Jasper. She prides herself on being a reaper and lets it reflect in her appearance.

Emblyn Vernon

The good girl reaper. Emblyn follows the rules, most of the time. A friend to most reapers, Emblyn has a kind heart and upbeat attitude. She sticks up for those that need support, and is always there to offer a hand when necessary.

Astin Stafford

Of royal blood, Prince Astin and Princess Ophelia have an arranged marriage for the sake of their kingdoms. He’s kind, charming, but a bit of a push over. Ophelia has no romantic feelings toward Astin.

Juliana Stapleton

Once human over a thousand year ago, Juliana was forever marked a dark angel. With black wings and a duty of responsibility, she doesn’t take her job lightly.
