Excerpt: Semblance by Logan Patricks

This is a book that I read at the start of the year, and I have to say I loved it! So when I was asked if I wanted to help out on this tour I said yes. As I've already reviewed this book I thought I'd offer you all an excerpt this time round, however my review can be found here.

Whoever said money couldn't buy happiness has never starved a day in their lives.
My name is Aria Valencia, a third year classical music student at the university, and I was down to my last dollar. Some nights, I seriously considered working at the rippers just to make ends meet, but the thought of my dad's spirit--God rest his soul--scowling at me while I danced up on some drooling degenerate was enough to turn me off the idea completely.
And then one night, chance came knocking on my door under the guise of the Midnight Society, a secret cabal comprised of the most wealthy and influential souls this side of the Universe. Their leader was a man named Shadow, who was equally enigmatic as he was gorgeous and, for some mystifying reason, had his dark brooding eyes focused on me.
Seduced by the promises of fame and fortune in exchange for a seemingly innocent request, I soon found myself drawn into a provocative world filled with both vast riches and unending lies and it didn't take long for me to realize what being a part of the Midnight Society actually entailed: shiny things, sensual romance, and dead bodies.
Being with Shadow came with a terrible price, one that I wasn't willing to pay. There's a dark side to every love story, and this one was mine.

We visited four more temple ruins that afternoon. Though not as extravagant as Angkor Wat, each one was just as haunting and beautiful. The one that touched me profoundly was Ta Prohm, where an ancient looking tree seeped through the ruin’s walls creating a harmonious union between stone and root.
Two different elements of nature, fused into one to form one of the most breathtaking things I’ve ever seen.
I turned around and looked at Shadow, who was too busy examining the carvings on the stone walls to notice that I was staring at him.
We were two distinct entities in this vast universe ourselves—Shadow living in a world of money, power, and a haunting past which suffocates him daily. Meanwhile I was a simple girl whose life blood was filled with impossible dreams and musical sonatas. My future terrified me and my past was filled with bittersweet memories.
A week ago, the thought of being in a relationship with this provocative, but ridiculously handsome man was the last thing I wanted. Seeing the symbiotic union between the tree and the temple made me wonder if a love between Shadow and I could be just as beautiful and spellbinding?
I wanted him. God, I wanted him so badly.
I wanted these dates to be more than just a façade.
I wanted these moments we had together to mean just as much to Shadow as they did to me. I wanted him to look at me as I looked at him—as the person who captured his heart.

Now, Elena’s back, but she refuses to give in to his demands for her to be his mate. The timing for all of this couldn’t be worse, either, because Gage and his circle of friends are trying to subdue a rogue pack of wolf shifters in Germany who threaten to out the Others to the world of humans. Will he be able to juggle the oncoming conflict and win back his mate?
Claws, love bites and handcuffs - OH MY!

Teaser Picture:

Elena started bucking in his hold, trying to force him to drop her. Silly human. As if she could force him to do anything. When he tightened his grip on her to keep her secure against him and quickened his steps towards the hallway that led to his bedroom, her frustration gave way to an explosion of angry words.
“You mother fuckin’, ball lickin’, hairball coughin’, oversized alley cat, douche juicin’, bastard!”
“Douche juicin’? That doesn’t sound very appealing. I hear there are creams for that if you need them, babe.” Gage crossed the threshold to his bedroom and walked over to the corner where he had his large, king-sized bed against the wall. He set his wiggling woman on the edge of the bed and then turned her body so that she faced him.
Quick as lightening, Elena brought her knee up, trying her best to land a blow to his nuts. He was prepared for the move, though, so he blocked the strike and then used his body to pin hers to the bed.
Frustrated, Elena spat out between her teeth, “Do they have a cream to cure Asshatism? I could finally get rid of you then.”

Spotlight: So... I Met books by Paul McAvoy

So... I Met A Ghost:

*Synopsis and cover from Goodreads

When my parents split up I started drawing pictures of gravestones in a church near my dad’s (I know it is weird, get over it), and here is where I met Beth. But I soon found that Beth was no ordinary girl, but she was in fact a ghost. I am not talking creepy ghost, the kind that puts a curse on you, but just an ordinary person really. I soon learned she was being chased by some nasty piece of work, and I soon realised there was only me who would be able to help her.

Not only was I going to try to save her from her hunter, but also try to help her move on, go into the light, and all that. Not much to ask, seeing as I was a teenager, was it! In the process I would learn that the ‘unknown’ was pretty clear, and that some men can be more evil than anything conjured up by the wildest of imaginations.

So… I met a Ghost is a sometimes creepy, sometimes funny short novel for young adults by author Paul McAvoy. A page-turner… you will not want to draw breath until the last page is read…

So... I Met An Alien:

*Synopsis and cover from Goodreads

It was an eventful day. I decided to skip school - not something I ever did I must add, as it's not big and it's not clever. But I was being bullied in class and needed time out. I should have spoken to someone about it, but it is not always that easy.

Good thing I did, as I just happened along an alien and managed to save his life. I then decided to help him get home and keep him from the clutches of men in dark suits who wanted to catch him and run tests on him... Yes, an eventful day all round. And I had my first kiss! Not with the alien, you weirdoes...

So... I met an Alien is a fun adventure book from the author of "So... I Met a Ghost," Paul McAvoy.

Review: Dissension by Katie Salidas

So finally, I've reached the point where I can share my thoughts and feelings on yet another awesome book by one of my absolute fave authors! And once again with Katie's newest book I was not disappointed, just upset that it ended so quickly!!

Disclaimer- I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thought and opinions are entirely my own.

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost.

But not all survivors were human.

In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators.

And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising...and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city’s Regent, her destiny is changed forever.

Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira’s patron – changes more than just Lucian’s perception about vampire kind.  The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted – a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers.

Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

My 5* Review-

The world as we know it has gone, its been destroyed and rebuilt. Only this time Vampires and humans had co-existed; for a while at least. Now the humans have become more dominate and controlling. Humans have imprisoned the vampires and use them for entertainment purposes.

One of the imprisoned vampires is Mira, Mira is a gladiator who has to fight in battles to the death; against others of her kind. She doesn't enjoy killing her own kind but its simple in the arena; kill or be killed! Mira desperately wants to escape, not just that she wants to free the rest of her kind, and she's always trying to think of new ways to escape.

The questions are: Will she meet her demise before she can hatch her latest plan? Can she escape? Or will she die trying?

Katie Salidas has succeeded in writing something different from her other books, this is a dark, gritty page turner; where the tables have turned and the hunter is know the prey and the humans are more bloodthirsty than the vampires.

The world that Katie Salidas has created for me was totally believable. I could see everything clearly in my own mind and I was soon completely immersed with Mira, Olivia and Lucian to name just a few. The characters are fantastic.

At the front of the story we meet Mira. Mira is an amazing vampire. She's not afraid to stand her ground knowing full well that every time she does, she will be punished; horribly! But still she stands her ground and faces her punishment head on! I suspect that Mira's desire for freedom; both for herself and her fellow vampires; is what drives her on; and gives her the strength to continually fight against the rules and her punishments.

There seems to be a human owner for the vampires, Mira is no exception. Mira's owner is Olivia. I can only think of one way to describe Olivia; she is a complete and utter bitch! I don't like her one bit, she's evil! Olivia is only out for monetary gain and really doesn't care about Mira, she will readily dish out punishments for the tiniest of things. The only time Olivia is happy is when when she gains from Mira's behaviour, so when Mira wins a fight in the arena or when Mira manages to secure herself a Patron!

In this new world there is a human governor; of sorts; called the Regent. The Regent; Lucian; watches the battles in the arena and decides whether the final fatal blow is to be delivered. Lucian has seen Mira fight in the arena, but he meets her properly on her latest escape attempt. He claims to be intrigued by Mira and wants to get to know her. Lucian convinces Mira to allow him to escort her back to her cell so that her punishment will be less severe. Lucian also decides to be Mira's patron much to both Mira and Olivia's surprise; not the Olivia will be complaining as this will give her more money! Mira doesn't trust Lucian. Lucian is is wondering if what he learnt growing up about vampires is actually true. I'm not sure if I trust Lucian, I have questions about him and his motives! I'll see how I feel after book 2!

I was hooked on this book from the beginning. I love everything about the book; the characters, the plot and the setting. I especially love how Katie Salidas has turned the tables on the vampires; so that they are no longer the predators, they are now the prey.

There is action and humour throughout, its dark and gritty, completely different to Katie Salidas' other books, and I have loved every last page! I couldn't have put this book down, not that I wanted too! Now comes the wait for book 2!

Reviews: Devri Walls Valentines Tour

Disclaimer: I was given books 1-3 by Danielle at Consuming Worlds as part of the blog tour and in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. I was then given book 4 by Devri Walls once more in exchange for nothing more
than an honest review.

Originally for my stop on this Blog Tour I was going to be reviewing books 1 to 3. However upon reading these 3 books I was so in love with them that Devri; being so awesome; said that she would send me book 4 in exchange for its honest review, I jumped at this offer. So today I will be reviewing all 4 books! If there is one thing I will say now it would be: if you have never read these books then seriously go and get all 4 and read them back to back, they are totally amazing.

Book #1; Wings Of Arian:

Book Info-

Title: Wings of Arian (Solus #1)
Publication Date: April 24, 2012
Genre: YA Fantasy

Book Blurb-

Kiora thought she had never heard a lie until she was sixteen. But she was wrong. Her entire existence was based on nothing but. She thought that evil did not exist. Lie. That magic was not real. Lie. And that the land of Meros was all there was. One more lie.

With Aleric telling her that evil is knocking on the door and that she is the only one who can stop them she has a choice to make. Refuse, or start the wildest most painful ride of her life.
She reluctantly dips her toe into her new existence of magic and threads, dragons and shapeshifters, and the person who wants to take control of it all: the evil Dralazar.

However, this journey was never meant to be hers alone. She will be accompanied by a Protector. To her disbelief, and utter irritation they name the hotheaded, stubborn, non -magical, (albeit gorgeous) Prince Emane. They will have to trust each other with their lives, but right now Kiora would settle for a non hostile conversation.

And now it comes down to this, If you had never heard a lie, would you know when you heard one? Is knowing good from evil innate? Kiora finds herself having to decide who lives and who dies on those very questions.

My 5* Review-

In the Wings Of Arian we met Kiora. Kiora has spent her life knowing that she was different to other people but never truly knowing why. She'd see things, often bad. Then those things would happen. Kiora thought that she was responsible for all those bad things, so she tries to hide what she sees from those around her.

One day Aleric appears and tells her about a role that she is destined to play; the Solus; in a world that is filled with magic and evil. Kiora is racing against time to learn everything about this magical world that surrounds and engulfs her, and about the magical abilities that she possesses.

As is the way of this world and the Prophecy, when there is a Solus there will always be a Protector. Now that the Solus has been found it comes to light who the Protector is too. When Kiora learns who her Protector is, its clear that they already know each other and that there is no love lost between them!
Will they manage to overcome this dislike and manage to work together? Or is this pairing a recipe for disaster?

I adore this book, it is an amazing start to what looks to be a fantastic series. I cannot wait to devour book #2!!

I can only describe Wings Of Arian as Spectacular, Unique and Amazing. Its full of romance and history and the characters.. Oh my the Characters!!
I really like Kiora, she's strong and manages to overcome most obstacles that are put in her way. She tries her hardest to accept and come to terms with everything that has happened; especially the introduction of magic, evil, the Prophecy and her Protector. All the while Kiora remains true to herself, apart from becoming stronger she doesn't allow evil and the events that unfold to change her.

Emane, Wow! Emane, or should I say Prince Emane, I love. He has no magical powers or abilities, but he is still very much a part of the Prophecy. Emane is strong, sarcastic, a Prince, a swordsman and quite the hottie!! ;)
In Wings Of Arian Devri Walls has done a fantastic job of putting her own stamp on the time old battle of Good vs Evil, and it is a very refreshing perspective to read.

Its nice to see that not even the characters are privy to the whole plot, as the story progresses it reveals details and information to both the characters and the readers at the same time. For me this added an element of suspense to the book, and made me feel even more like I was apart of journey faced by the characters.

Overall this is a truly great book, packed with magic, suspense, action, adventure and love. It has captured both my attention and my heart, and I have been dragged into its very centre!! I am itching to start book #2!
If you are a lover of Young Adult and Fantasy then I honestly believe that you Need to get this book!

I'm off to be pulled even further into Kiora and Emane's adventure and Journey in book #2 Wings Of Tavea. Keep reading for my review!!

Book #2; Wings Of Tavea:

Book Info-

Title: Wings of Tavea (Solus #2)
Publication Date: December 11, 2012
Genre: YA Fantasy

Book Blurb-

Kiora is rapidly learning that evil and lies come in shades of black and white and swirling greys, but nothing could have prepared her for the shock of leaving Meros.

Kiora and her protector Emane step through the pass into a world they never knew existed but were always meant to save, only to find it far worse than they could have ever imagined. Good has been forced into hiding for its own survival, while the rest of the land bows to the Shadow, a force that pushes any remaining thoughts of Dralazar from Kiora’s mind. This land is full of new creatures, each more dangerous than the last. Her visions have taken on a deadly twist, and magic, or what comes of it, was never so real. And then there is Alcander: a Tavean, their guide, and an entirely different kind of trouble.

My 5* Review-

After reading Wings Of Arian I was so glad that I had Wings Of Tavea ready to continue with, as I don't think that I could have walked away without reading book #2!

Wings Of Arian is based more around a place void of Evil, Wings Of Tavea is the opposite, its a place void of good; or at least very little good exists.
We know; from Wings Of Arian; that Emane has been give a magical snake armband and when Dralazar tried to remove it, it sunk its fangs into his hand. In book #2 Dralazar has learnt that the cure for his snake bite is...(I won't complete this as it would spoil it for you)! This cure made me smile because I quite frankly, think that there is a better chance of Hell freezing over than Dralazar actually getting that cure!! But Dralazar being Dralazar he tries anyway! (I'll give him 10 out 10 for trying)!!!

I was totally shocked at the appearance of Alcander, and I was gob-smacked when events involving Alcander turned the way they did. I like Alcander, but I do have reservations about him too, maybe this will change as the series progresses. Alcander tries to keeps his feelings hidden or pushes them aside; unlike Emane.

As well as meeting Alcander we also meet Lomay. I found Lomay interesting. He seems to have a habit of doing the wrong things for the right reasons, or he does the right things but goes about it the wrong way.

The Wings Of Tavea sees both new and old characters making appearances and playing key roles throughout. I have loved every minute that I have spent in these lands with these totally amazing characters. Especially Emane!!
Once again Devri Walls carried me off into Kiora and Emane's world through her amazing and vivid descriptions. This world is a world full of creatures that I have heard of before and creatures that I've never heard of before. But after reading Wings Of Tavea and journeying through its world I feel as though I know all of the creatures, characters and places very well.

The characters all face their own personal trials and problems as well as those they face together. Some of these only help to strengthen them and help them grow as characters. Its not just the characters that face these trials either, as a reader I did too.

Throughout Wings Of Tavea I was taken on an epic journey through magical unknown lands packed to breaking point with amazing creatures, adventure, love and evil too. No doubt you'll laugh, cheer, shout and maybe even shed a tear or two! I did!

This is one series that if you haven't started to read yet I would strongly recommend grabbing yourself a copy and getting comfy!

Book #3; Wings Of Nestor:

Book Info-

Book Title: Wings of Nestor (Solus #3)
Publication Date: June 24, 2013
Genre: YA Fantasy

Book Blurb-

Kiora needs answers. Who is the Shadow? Who is Jasmine? Are they connected? And even more pressing—how can she stop the Shadow from using her dreams as a map to find them? They have escaped three times, but are living on borrowed time—and everybody knows it.

Kiora’s search will push her closer to Alcander, send her to the dragon mountain of Toopai, and lead straight back to Meros—where magic will finally return to the land of no magic. Answers will be uncovered and plans unearthed that have been waiting for thousands of years.

But with the Shadow’s forces gathering, the rebels are hurtling toward one outcome: war. Armed with knowledge and hope, Kiora is determined to change that path, but will fate allow it? Or will it teach her a hard lesson about following her own destiny?

My 5* Review-

So Wings Of Nestor! I have read all 3 books back to back and I have managed to bargain myself a copy of book 4 too, in exchange for an honest review. But I digress. This is book #3, and Oh. My. Gosh... What a book it was!!

Kiora has had such an upheaval from life as she knew it. She always knew she was different but never understood! Aleric explained all of that to Kiora. Kiora has since continued on her journey and in herself has become stronger. Her magical powers have grown too; powers that rival only that of the Creators. She has gained a royal Protector who she has fallen in love with; and he with her. Seriously though, in a matter of months she has been through hell and back; and should probably have the t-shirt too! But that's still not enough. Kiora has continued to grow throughout each and every book, obstacle and her powers just seem to get stronger and stronger.

Emane and Alcander have grown too. They begin to shine as main characters in their own right. They both support Kiora and do all they can to aid her.

Alcander, I'm still not convinced about him. Okay so maybe I'm being a little harsh on him. I mean after all he has risked his own future happiness to help keep Kiora safe and to give her the ability to make her decision without the added guilt of knowing what Alcander has just risked. That said Alcander plays a big part in the heartache that Emane is suffering; that's not allowed!!

Kiora isn't blame free either though. Fair enough she has been through soo much in the last few months but, after learning about the connection she now shares with Alcander she is openly flaunting that in Emane's face, which is bang out of order. I know that Kiora and Emane are having problems even being able to touch each other, but really Kiora do you have to be so cruel and rub it in his face?? Come here Emane I'll hold you!!

Wings of Nestor is amazing and will transport you to a magical and breath taking world. The details are revealed just enough that I was kept guessing and the things to come remain secret, all the time I was kept wanting more and totally hooked. One such example of this is that Devri Walls reveals that Emane has seen a painting of one of Lomay's visions but she doesn't reveal what it is, I've been left on tenter hooks waiting to see what this turns out to be.

My heart is almost completely broken, and I fear that before the end of book #4 my heart will be in shredded into tiny little pieces. I have been able to laugh, shout and cry at this book and I also fear that I will be shedding more tears before the series finishes.

Wings Of Lomay promises to be an epic finale to the series. I'm almost too scared to read it, but I'm also excited and I HAVE to read it. I NEED to know what happens and how this all ends.

My 5* Review-

Book #4 Wings Of Lomay... What can I say?... Oh yeah I know what I can start with...

Sorry, I apologise for shouting there. But Oh. My... I cried! So much!! I wouldn't have minded so much but when I started that particular part I was sat in the middle of a busy coffee shop and I had to stop reading!! But I'm getting ahead of myself here.

There is so much I want to write, but as I will NOT publish spoilers for anyone who hasn't yet read this! So my review...

Kiora, Emane, Alcander, Drustan, and Arturo have all grown and been through so much throughout this series. Their characters have gone from strength to strength. They have faced evils that would have made lesser people turn and run screaming for the hills!

The levels of magic in this book reach new heights, as the forces of good really do unite to try and rid the world of evil once and for all, but can it be done? If it is done what will the cost of it be to Kiora? those that she loves? and the rebels?

This review is so unfair, I want to write so much more but I am so scared of publishing spoilers, and if I did that I couldn't forgive myself.

Wings Of Lomay made me laugh, yell, smile and cry! As I've already mentioned the part that caused the most tears I came across sat in my local coffee shop I had to stop reading until I was back at home behind closed doors!! After feeling like that at the start of that part, you would have though that I would have been prepared by the time I got to continue, right? Wrong! When I continued to read at home I openly wept! I felt EVERY bit of hurt that was written on those pages. Which brings me back to the start of my review again... WHY DEVRI, WHY?

Wings Of Lomay is well thought out, superbly written and had me from page 1. I was transported into Kiora, Emane and Alcander's world once more. I felt like I was there through all of their ups and downs, I've been there on all of their journey's and on the beach during THAT scene, the scene that completely destroyed my heart!

Wings Of Lomay is every bit the epic finale that I thought it would be, and it was a fitting end to an amazing series.

Solus Series by Devri Walls Overview:

I'm so sad to see that Kiora, Emane, Alcander, Drustan, Arturo and all the others have come to the end of their adventures. I will miss them all, some more than others.

It's not very often I review an entire series from start to finish. But this is one series I'm so glad to have done that with. I was completely hooked from page 1 of book #1.
