Reviews: The Second Sign Series by Elizabeth Arroyo

Book #1 - The Second Sign:

Bred to believe in the war between angels and demons, Gabby has come to the conclusion that love is responsible for war, jealousy, and all the other deadly sins she can think of. So when she’s exiled to the middle of nowhere for getting kicked out of her fifth school for fighting, she doesn't expect to meet Jake. Much less fall in love. But Jake is quickly drawn to the eerie beauty of her violet eyes while Gabby is unsettled by their undeniable connection.
When a demon guardian comes to collect her soul, she refuses to give it up. She’s not a demon. She can’t be. Her father and twin brother are angels. The demon gives Gabby twenty-four hours to decide her allegiance, and then starts killing her short list of friends, leaving a message behind: She is the Second Sign.

As Gabby and Jake begin to unravel the mystery behind the Second Sign, she learns Jake may be the key to saving her soul. But it means a sacrifice has to be made that will change their lives forever.

My 4* Review-

This book is an interesting take on good vs evil. And freewill is the major part throughout the book.

Most of us think that demons and angels are clearly either good or evil, but here we find that they still have free will too.

From the cover of this book I assumed Gabby to possibly be an angel or fallen angel, but that is not the case. She is something very unique and unknown. Gabby and her brother are sent to their family cabin out in the middle of nowhere. Its at the cabin that Gabby meets Jake.

The Second Sign is a dark, mysterious paranormal book; with dark bloody details which show how awful and evil demons really can be, it also makes the story creepier too.

I was devastated by the choice that Gabby had to make near the end of the book. It was a hard decision to be faced with, but she didn't have much of a choice.

The story is intriguing and a little confusing at times; I've got a few questions that I'm hoping will be answered in book #2. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading book #1 in this series and I'm looking forward to continuing with book #2.

Which leads me to my review...

Book #2 - The Second Shadow:

Jake thought being demon meant a shredded humanity, stripped of all human emotion. Chaos and self-preservation dominates a demon’s instincts. But Jake feels every ounce of pain and despair around him.
And it’s driving him deeper into Hell.
Gabby’s choice to save him last summer left a fissure in Hell’s gate that released a malevolent evil. When Jake’s given a mission by the demons to shadow a human girl who may know the whereabouts of an ethereal weapon, he doesn’t expect to see Gabby. But Fate has her own agenda.
When Jake and Gabby are thrown together on a camping trip with a group of delinquent teens, Jake begins to grapple with the haunting choices he made in the past. When the evil finds them, the group begins to battle for their lives, alliances are made, and truths revealed.
As the evil begins to influence Jake, he questions his link to the demons, his purpose, and his love for Gabby.

But the answers to those questions are only found in Hell. And it may cost him his soul.

My 4* Review-

The Second Shadow continues where The Second Sign left off.

Jake is part demon and he's trying to come to terms with everything that has happened. So too is Gabby. The two of them are back together on a camping trip for troubled teens.

I liked Gabby. Her personality and attitude are great. She's also stubborn and determined. After everything that has happened Jake still thinks that he and Gabby should be together.

The author does a great job of making you picture what she's describing even the bloodier moments. The thought and detail in this book, have certainly paid off. The details and the characters whether good or bad all play a part and are all intriguing and unpredictable.

This certainly isn't a light read, I would strongly advise reading The Second Sign before reading The Second Shadow so you don't become confused. the Second Shadow is deep, dark, twisted and at times bloody too. I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.

About The Author-

Elizabeth spent most of her younger years as an avid reader with a wild imagination which led her to write her first manuscript at the age of fourteen. Her fascination with the paranormal was influenced by the vivid ghost and demon stories her father told her as a child, scaring the crap out of her. It also led her to ask the "what if" question that propelled her down the path of the fantastical.
But, life got in the way. Elizabeth completed a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice at Northeastern Illinois University and works in the community strengthening families. Her love of stories held, and in 2008 she found herself back into her storytelling roots and began writing again. Since then she's published a short story in SQ Magazine, countless musings on her blog - Chandara Writes, and completed three manuscripts.
In 2012, Elizabeth signed with Sapphire Star Publishing to release her debut novel, THE SECOND SIGN, a Dark YA Paranormal Romance, slated for an early 2013 release.
Elizabeth resides in Chicago with her family, a household of kids, and the bliss of chaos. The good kind.
