Review: River's Edge (audiobook/ebook) by Erin Keyser Horn

*Cover from Goodreads
“Does salvation have a number? How many lives must I save before I’m redeemed?”

Eighteen-year-old Kasia Maier planned to spend her summer studying turtles in the sand prairie, not trudging through fearsome backwaters with her new coworker, Blayne. And when a monster drags Blayne into the Mississippi River, Kasia never expected herself to jump in after him. She saves him, but soon she’s discovering the monstrous in other places . . . including herself. Now she’s wavering on the edge between a dwindling humanity and a dreadful immortality. The river is tempting one moment, terrifying the next. She doesn’t understand who she is or where she belongs. Blayne, the one person with the potential to help her, is also the hardest to resist. If she can’t stop her own transformation into a river spirit, he will be her first victim. And that's just the beginning—even greater threats are lurking in the shadows.

Combining the Illinois setting of Thomson Causeway and the scariest of Slavic mythology, RIVER’S EDGE will make you question everything you know about nature, evil, and redemption.

My Review-

Disclaimer: I received an audiobook copy of this from the author in exchange for an honest review, all opinions expressed in this review are that of me and only me.

Kasia had always been told by her mother to stay away from water and from men, and she always has. Because of this advice Kasia has a scum scale which she uses to rate the men she does meet. The time has come for Kasia to head off to start her internship working in the Prairie. When she gets there she is informed by her boss Scott that he wants her to work with Blayne on the river. So on her first day in a new job Kasia has managed to blow her mother's two rules!

When Kasia and Blayne begin working in a canoe on the river monitoring turtles, Blayne 'falls' in the river, so Kasia does the only thing she can and jumps in to try and save him. Whilst trying to save Blayne Kasia discovers things both in the river and about herself too. Kasia's swim to save Blayne sparks some very unusual changes in Kasia, changes which she has to try and keep from Blayne and her boss Scott, whilst still doing her job and trying to understand just what is happening to her.

I was originally reviewing the audiobook, but I ended up listening to the audiobook whilst following in the ebook; which I purchased. Only because it was too noisy on the aeroplane and whenever someone interrupted me I would remove my earphones without pausing the book, which meant I kept losing my place.

Erin Keyser Horn threw me head first into a detailed world that allowed me to picture the characters, creatures, monsters and their world easily in my own head. I loved the readers voice and her ability to use different voices throughout the story. The pacing was really good.

I found River's Edge to be captivating, intriguing, fun and detailed read full of the authors own serious imagination.

River's Edge is a modern twist on Slavic mythology and it focuses on the creatures that live in the river and around its edges. The characters are well thought out and I thought them to be realistically portrayed.

Kasia's mother left when Kasia turned 18. Up until she begins working for Scott with Blayne she has always followed her mother's advice about staying away from men and water, although she has never fully understood why.

I had recently added River's Edge to my TBR list after a friend on Facebook recommending it to me. So when I was asked if I'd like to review the audiobook I jumped at chance to listen to/read River's Edge, and I'm certainly looking forward to the next book in this series.

Synopsis: Zahara Faraday looks like a normal eighteen-year-old and lives in a quiet neighborhood with her overprotective parents. She works at a bookstore and hangs out with her best friend Becca King on a daily basis. But underneath the normal lies a secret life filled with dangerous supernaturals. Zahara belongs to a world made of Light Witches, rogue Imagoes (supernatural creatures with super strength, speed, and silver skin when the moon is out), fallen angels, and Nephilim (hybrid children born half-human, half-angel). Where her father Solomon Faraday is human, her mother Mia and her Aunt Catalina are Light Witches. They help protect the human world by hunting down rogue supernaturals who commit heinous acts against humans. What they never expected was the possibility of having to hunt down the one rogue coven they had befriended and come to trust in their battle against Lucifer. Rekesh Saint-Louis is the leader of the most powerful Imago coven in Florida and now he’s the most suspected. Supernatural bodies are starting to pile up with an ancient ritual long forbade being used to murder them and the symbol, one large cross with four smaller crosses around it—which represents Rekesh’s coven— being left behind. Rekesh and the Elders of his coven set out to find who is behind the murders and clearing his name before a war between the covens begins. To make matters more difficult, Rekesh also has to deal with the return of someone he has been keeping a secret.

Meanwhile, Zahara and Becca are spending more time brushing up on their training, knowing an attack from Lucifer can come at any moment. Between patrolling neighborhoods and hanging at the boarding school created by Charles Stephens—a fallen angel who created the school to protect the children of rogue supernaturals—they are thrown into one battle after another. Zahara begins to develop a closer bond with Jason as they train and chase down clues to clear Rekesh’s name. What she doesn’t know is the very powerful secret Jason is keeping; a secret that will change the course of the fight with Lucifer.

But Rekesh’s coven being set up isn’t the only danger. A new powerful and lethal drug has emerged from the shadows of the supernatural world called Inferi. The drug has two deadly side effects: it leaves the supernatural hungering for blood—both human and supernatural—and grants them the elemental power they had once possessed.

Lucifer is on the move and he will stop at nothing to get his hands on Zahara and complete the first act of his plan.

A battle is about to begin.

One that may cost the Faraday family everything they hold dear.

Synopsis: Have you ever wondered what could be hiding in the shadows?

Well, for eighteen-year-old Zahara Faraday, she doesn’t have to wonder. You see she comes from a lineage of Light Witches, those who have chosen to help protect and serve between the supernatural world and the human world. The only problem is Zahara, like her father Solomon, is as human as a human being can be whereas her mother, Mia, and her Aunt Catalina, were born as Light Witches. As a family they hunt down rogue supernaturals—creatures who harm humans or who have committed an act against their kingdom.

Zahara’s hunting skills are usually kept dormant since her parents would prefer she live life as a normal human girl without knowledge of the supernatural world. She plans on doing just that—except when she finds a couple being attacked by fairies, she has no choice but to step in. Before she can return to pretending to be blissfully ignorant, Zahara encounters a problem she isn’t the least equip to handle: Bryan Hamilton, the good looking new co-worker she has to help train. In a heartbeat, her best friend, Becca King, has set her up on a double date with herself and her new crush, Rekesh Saint-Louis, who happens to be the most powerful leader of the biggest Imago Coven in South Florida –supernatural creatures with the ability to control water . . . and suck out human souls.

Zahara has no time to focus on how she’s going to explain her double date with her best friend and the enemy they have a tentative truce with to her parents because soon one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven is found murdered with a strange tattoo of a snake with wings carved into his arm.

Zahara is then thrown into a whirlwind battle with an angel determined to have revenge against God, an Imago coven she doesn’t think they should trust, and slew of dream-eating fairies and powerful Nephilims, hybrid children of angels and humans, more than happy to rip her to shreds.

Normal just got a deadlier definition.

Kieran Donovan has always been a doormat to the women in his life. Begging his wife not to leave after finding her in bed with not one—but five men—only provides further proof of that.

In need of an escape from an empty house and a broken heart, Kieran heads to Midtown to see his estranged brother, Liam. There he meets Shayne Wickham, Liam’s best friend. Shayne’s dark and sexy with a wild streak a mile long and a sexual appetite for things Kieran’s never even dreamed of doing. Despite the usual safeguards Shayne keeps around herself and her own wounded heart, she finds herself more than willing to show him the ropes…and the floggers…and the paddles.

Kieran’s never seen himself as dominant in any aspect of his life. But when Shayne submits herself to him, it ignites an inner strength and hunger he never knew he had—and feelings Shayne didn’t know she could have. So used to keeping others at an arm’s length, the ease with which she finds herself trusting Kieran is both exciting and unsettling. Review: Bloods Voice by Áine P Massie

Title: Blood’s Voice
Author: Áine P Massie
Series: a House Millar book (#1)
Genre: New Adult/Paranormal  Romance
Publisher: CHBB
Release Date: Mar 15 2014
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print

Anya Millar had no memory of her life or an instruction manual on how to navigate the insane world of humans, biting, and reality. Instead, Anya has had to learn to navigate the world of love, life, and sanity while avoiding those that would see her dead or enslaved.
This is the ongoing journey of Anya and Nicholas, human loving vampires and the human they love, Declán. What makes it all more complicated is that they are abominations in their own world and Declán is a natural born vampire hunter called a Guardian.
Anya must come to terms with who she is and her missing past, Nicholas must win back the object of his eternal love while dealing with new cravings in his silent heart, and Declán must learn to destroy the very creatures that he has unequivocally given his heart and blood.

My 4* Review-
Anya is a vampire with a difference, she has amnesia. She remembers nothing of her life before she woke up at Star's house. Anya is also a vegetarian; she only drinks animal blood; not human. Why? because she doesn't want to hurt humans, so much so she is determined to live a normal life; she goes to school and is friends with 3 humans. Skye, Kayla and DeclánDeclán is Kayla's twin brother and Skye's 'boyfriend'.

Then there's Nicholas. Nicholas is another vegetarian vampire. He's known Anya for a long time, known her since before she disappeared and returned with amnesia. Nicholas and Anya are not just good friends, before Anya disappeared they had shared blood and created a blood bond too.

But Anya's past looks to have finally caught up with her. Can Anya and both her vampire and human friends overcome Anya's past or will the Educators finally win?

The synopsis for Blood's Voice intrigued me, so I signed up for the tour and found myself immersed in Anya's world.

I'm going to start by saying I really enjoyed this book. At the start I found there to be a few similarities to another vampire book/film series, but that doesn't last very long. Once past those similarities I was able to get fully into the story.

It did take me a little while to adjust to Áine Massie's writing style; not because its bad just because it was different to my recent reads; but once I had gotten used to it, I was off and running.

The story's pacing is good and seems to have a relatively natural flow. There is a fair amount of dialogue; which for the most part is good; I don't mind dialogue so the amount doesn't bother me. However, there were a few places where the dialogue felt too formal or a bit forced. I understand that Anya is a centuries old vampire in the body of a 16 year old, but I did struggle a few times to picture her saying some parts.

Anya, Nicholas and Declán, this is a triangle with a difference in that Anya and Nicholas are vampires that share a blood bond and are mates. Anya and Declán; feelings develop feelings for each other, Declán is then bound to Anya by blood; which causes Declán to be bound to Nicholas too. Most of the intimate moments are kept as either Anya and Nicholas, or Anya and Declán. There is only one which has Anya, Nicholas and Declán together, and its portrayed very tastefully.

Áine Massie has created a very believable plot and set of characters. This is a story of romance, action, mystery and suspense. I'm looking forward to reading book 2.

About The Author-
Áine P Massie is originally from Florida, she now lives in Wisconsin where she works on her House Millar series full time while raising four children (the term herding cats comes to mind). Her major in College was Childhood Education (specializing in ages zero to five) with a minor study in Deaf Culture/ASL. She is also a Wiccan priestess dedicated to the gods, family, and love.
Áine is a proud member of the Rom-Critters, the Romance Writers of America®, Celtic Hearts Romance Writers, and Rainbow Romance Writers. Áine has always had a particular fascination with vampires, mythology, and the unusual. When she can escape from her children and books, she enjoys . . . oh yes, reading, playing, ritual, a good cappuccino, and working with her healing stones.
Her first published work came in high school where she was part of a writing and drama group. However, she has been reading the likes of Shakespeare and Poe since late elementary school and enjoys most forms of fiction.

Reviews: The Sweet Series by Bailey Ardisone

This is a series I've been meaning to start reading for a while, but I kept scheduling everything else in front of it. So after speaking to Bailey Ardisone on Facebook I agreed a date for the review of the series so far. Now it has been written on my schedule there was nothing being pushed aside by something else!!

I'm SO glad I have begun reading this series. So onto the books and my reviews...

Sweet Oblivion (The Sweet Series Book 1):

*Cover and Synopsis from Goodreads

When two worlds collide, nightmares become reality. And some secrets...are best kept in Oblivion.
...Until there is hope.

Have you ever wanted to forget? Nariella Woodlinn has. Many times. Especially when her already frustrating life gets turned upside down by a mysterious boy who randomly shows up in her small town. And she can't seem to understand anything about him, despite how much she tries.
Nari hates everything about her life, except for her best friend Rydan, but now that they've been separated during their senior year of high school, she has to learn to make new friends without him. When strange, unexplainable phenomena start becoming an every day part of her life, Nari struggles to come to grips with reality. And with love.

Naminé has responsibilities. Duties. It is her obligation to fulfill all that is asked of her by their King. But when a glimmer of hope is introduced to her by a prisoner she tends to, it means life or death for her and her people. She does all that she can to turn that hope into reality, and finally end the vicious war that has been ensuing since she was born. Even if that means keeping it secret from her King. Even if it means carrying out the biggest betrayal against the King ever seen during her time.

She has hope. She will fulfill her duty. She will not let her people down.

My 5* Review-

Disclaimer: I have downloaded this for free from Amazon UK, the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own and I have not received any compensation for this review.

In Sweet Oblivion there are two stories being told alongside each other. These two stories are in different realms that seem worlds apart but in fact are so close. The stories file the lives of two very different girls.

We met Nariella (Nari) who has had a pretty crap life so far. Her mother died when she was young and her father had hated her ever since blaming Nari for the death of his wife, he has subjected Nari to a childhood of physical and emotional abuse in one form or another. She has had one friend who is her rock; Ryden, he's always been there for her and they are best friends. But now Nari is facing her last year of school alone as Ryden is being sent to a different school; she expects that this year will be her worst year yet! So when newcomers Zaylie and her twin brother Desmond befriend her suddenly this year doesn't look as daunting. However, Nari is life is turned upside down shortly after the arrival of Mycah! He brings chaos by the bucket, and hotness!! ;)

We also meet Namine. Namine is a dream weaver and she lives in a dying kingdom. She fears for her family's survival and the survival of the kingdom. Namine lives in hope that she can bring home their only chance of survival. Namine had kept her abilities hidden from everyone including her family, but when she is found out and ordered to dream weave for the King, she continues to try and contact and bring home the one she hopes will be their saviour. Can Namine deceive the King and break through to the one she needs?

I've had Sweet Oblivion on my TBR list for some time now, but i kept signing up for tours and putting more and more books in front of it. But after chatting with Bailey of Facebook I picked a date to review this on, so now i finally get to read the series so far. My first thought…

Why did i not read this sooner??!!

Sweet Oblivion is a great start to what promises to be a fantastic series. (Yes I do have books 2 and 3 lined up ready to continue with)!
The stories of these two girls run alongside each other perfectly, there was never any confusion as to whose story I was reading. They are both paced perfectly, each giving enough to keeping you wanting more but pulling you further and further into the story so there's no way of walking away.

There are twists and turns throughout the plot leaving you guessing just what's coming up next. Bailey has done a really good job of keeping secrets, she has created a well crafted trail of breadcrumbs, giving just enough to pique the curiosity levels. But it's not just Bailey who has secrets the characters too have them by the bucket; especially Mycah. *sigh* (Bailey has certainly made me want my own Mycah)!

Mycah's appearance seems to cause the most disruption for Nari. Not only because of the dangerous secrets that Mycah has; which in turn puts Nari in danger, but Mycah is causing problems between her and her best friend Rydan too. After meeting Mycah Nari also finds herself re-thinking one of her most important life rules; boys are bad!

Sweet Oblivion is full of intrigue, suspense, action and romance. The two stories are written extremely well and when they do meet right near the end the merge so easily. The characters are easy to love. Nari; whose life sucks, Rydan; her sexy best friend and rock, Zaylie and Desmond; her new friends who bring some humor to the mix, and Mycah (Oh, Mycah; wipes away the drool); the sexy, mysterious, dangerous stranger who calls to her! Namine; the other realm servant who wants to restore peace and save both her family and the kingdom in which they live.

Sweet Oblivion has left me with some that I hope Sweet Escape will be answering for me. On to Sweet Escape...

Sweet Escape (The Sweet Series Book 2):

*Cover and Synopsis from Goodreads

Sometimes the hardest war to fight is the one raging within yourself…

Life will never be the same for Nariella Woodlinn. Just when she thought she had it all figured out, her world comes crumbling down around her-yet again. With no idea who she is or even where she came from, how can she save herself?
She once thought her biggest problems were the ones brought on by the mysterious man she refused to fall in love with—Mycah. But she quickly discovers none of that compares to what she is about to encounter next.

This time, it isn’t because of who Mycah is.
This time, it’s because of who she is.

Naminé risked everything to save her people. Her goal was to bring their only hope back to their Kingdom. My 5* Review-

Disclaimer: I have purchased and downloaded this book from Amazon UK, the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own and I have not received any compensation for this review.

Once more I was hurled head first into Bailey's magical worlds to rejoin both Nari and Namine, Rydan and Mycah. A magical world where the truth is hidden and distorted, and there is a war between two Kingdoms of Elves!

Nari's life has been changed forever, ever since Mycah walked into it. Nari and Rydan have lost their one safe place; the weeping willow. This one tree that was their peace and tranquility, for Nari now serves as nothing more than a reminder as to what she no longer has and to just how much things have changed; for all of them. Nari is unsure of who to trust and needs to learn to let her heart and instincts take control as she enters a world that she never knew existed.

Namine is desperately trying to bring home her kingdom's Savior before its too late. However when her dreamweaving abilities are discovered, she is ordered to work for the King and only dreamweave with who he tells her to. Namine continues her own personal quest and goes against the King's orders. Can she succeed without being caught?

Bailey continues with the two POV's throughout, and again it works seamlessly. The end of Sweet Oblivion saw Bailey reveal the secret behind Mycah's and Rydan's past, which in turn caused a whole load more heartache and anguish for Nari. She was left despairing over Rydan. Now Mycah has gone her anguish and despair have gone to a whole other level. Nari closes off from her friends and seems to temporarily shut down.

Namine too suffers some despair as the Kingdoms savior returns only for Bailey to turn him! Bailey make the savior become nothing more than a pawn for the wrongful King, He now stands against everything that he was once fighting for.

Bailey has seduced me into the magical and amazing world that she has created, I felt as though I was there alongside each and everyone of them and apart of their adventures. Bailey has a serious knack for making me believe everything that she has written even when its lies!! This enabled her to drop some pretty big twists on me that I wasn't expecting!!

It was fantastic to learn more about all of the characters and to see how each one has grown and progressed. They are all still loveable and I'm still seriously crushing of Mycah!!

This book is once more filled with magic, romance, action, suspense and emotion. There were times when I held my breath, I wanted to cry out in either warning or in anguish, there were also times when I wanted to cry.

Sweet Escape has answered many many questions that Sweet Oblivion raised, it has also raised more questions that I hope Sweet Requiem will be answering!!

So onto Sweet Requiem...

Sweet Requiem (The Sweet Series Book 3):

***This is categorized as a New Adult novel, with some mild adult content***

*Cover and Synopsis from Goodreads

Returning to Kennebunkport, Maine, isn't all that it's cracked up to be for Nari and Rydan. Barely escaping one evil by the skin of their teeth, running head first into the next was the last thing they were expecting. With Nari's best friend Zaylie held hostage by the leader of the Black Eagles, Nari's number one priority is getting Zaylie, along with everyone else she cares about, out of Nikolai's clutches safe and sound. Only, the worst thing that could possibly happen has happened- Death.

Before Nari can even comprehend her worst nightmare coming true, she is pulled back into the very place she had thought she escaped. But the nightmare doesn't end there. Just as she sees a silver-lining to her otherwise gloomy cloud, she discovers heart-wrenching news and has to yet again escape an untimely death.

With the hope of undoing what would normally be permanent, Nari, with the help of the two brothers she loves most in the world, sets her mind on a mission that will ultimately mean her downfall. Is the end result worth the sacrifice?

Naminé is left in the Earthly realm to tend to an injured Ender and Fëa. She must learn to cope with the new human elements thrown her way, but in the process, discovers something may be terribly wrong with her family back home - the one place she can no longer get to.

Continue the journey that started it all. Mycah, Rydan, Nari, and Naminé are determined to take back the throne. Except, that which starts sweet, ends bitter...

My * Review-

Disclaimer: I was gifted a copy of this book by the author for nothing more than an honest review (and to aid my drooling of the Smexy Mycah)! ;) All opinions, thoughts and drool patches contained within this review are entirely my own!

So Nari thought things had been tough so far, well guess what? That's right they are about to get a whole lot tougher!!

Nari and Rydan, along with Namine, Ender and two Fëa have come back to Maine, this was in an attempt to flee from the evils of one realm only to find another evil from this realm awaiting them; Nikolai. After fighting their way free of Nikolai upon their return; and suffering injury and loss as a result. Nari is suddenly pulled back into the willow tree, and Rydan takes off to find her leaving Namine; with an injured Ender and two Fëa; with instructions on how to get help from Rydan's parents.

They all face a huge battle, a battle bigger than all of them put together. The questions remain will their combined strengths be enough? Can they survive what fate has in store for them?

This book was an emotional rollercoaster and once I was on there was no escaping, until the very end. So needless to say I was hooked from the very start. Sweet Requiem is laced with action, suspense, lies, secrets, truths, heartbreak and emotion. I think by the time I finished the last page my nerves were shot, and my heart in pieces by my feet!!

Sweet Requiem shows more of Mycah's life. Mycah has always seemed like an absolute rock, he always there when Nari has needed him to pick up the pieces or talk sense to her, but his back story kind of shatters that and shows that Mycah too is a little broken. His hurt and pain are very real and I could feel it. This is the main reason for my heart being left in pieces!

All of the characters continue to go from strength to strength, as well as showing some of their weaknesses. Rydan and Nari become stronger once they accept the truth of where they really belong and embrace it. Mycah has always been Loyal and fierce, but Sweet Reqiuem shows just how loyal, and that he truly is a force to be reckoned with.

The story is an intricately woven web of details, some truths and some lies. Its action packed from the start and will take a firm hold of your heart, slowly squeezing it more and more with each page!

My questions from Sweet Escape have been answered and again I have more from Sweet Requiem. I'm now (im)patiently awaiting the release of book 4 (and Mycah) so that I can have those questions answered too.

This series so far has been absolutely fantastic, I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every page of each book. I honestly don't know why I didn't read it sooner!! So now for the painstaking wait for book 4 and the return of Mycah!!

If you haven't read this series and love romance, suspense, action packed books complete with some seriously hot Elves then I suggest giving this series a shot.

Now for a little about this extremely talented web weaving author...

About The Author-

I am a brand new just-out-of-the-wrapping Indie writer. I never once thought of myself as a writer growing up, although I must admit I always loved the idea of it. I just never thought I could. I have always been a dreamer and had an overactive imagination though, and instead of playing with my typical toys that my parents bought me from the store, I had the most fun pretending their belts/bracelets were dinosaurs or a box of bandaids I'd find in the bathroom were my new pet snakes. Once I grew out of toys, I was more interested in drawing, watching Japanese Anime, and reading Manga. I still to this day do those things of course, but now that I have discovered my love of writing I've realized how much I want to keep doing it. It all started with my love of diving into a book and going on an adventure with the many characters I met on the way. I mean really, who doesn't love a good book? With the help of my husband of 7 years, who kept pushing me to try writing, I decided I wanted to take some of the ideas that had been floating around my head and put them on paper. And voila! After many discussions with my sister, not to mention many all-nighters writing, we finally created something of our own. I also love animals and could not live without music. My outlook on life is to be yourself and those around you can either take it or leave it. Just a few other things I am forever obsessed with are - traveling, different cultures, giant rocky mountains and castles, anything in miniature form, my home city of Chicago, sour skittles, and sleeping/naps is my vice.
