Review: Thirty Scary Tales by Rayne Hall

Thirty creepy, atmospheric horror stories by Rayne Hall.

These stories are 'quiet' horror, not overly violent and gory, although there are some graphic moments.

Please note: these stories have been previously published in magazines, e-zines and anthologies as well as in the Six Scary Tales collections.

My 3.5* Review-

Disclaimer- I was given a copy of Thirty Scary Tales by Rayne Hall in exchange for nothing other than an honest review. All opinions and thought expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I really enjoyed reading Thirty Scary Tales by Rayne Hall, but I can't help feeling a little bit let down, maybe my expectations were too high I'm not sure, but I definitely didn't find this book scary. Creepy at times yes, but scary not for me. Maybe I've read too much horror and have become desensitised to it?
Either way this is still a really good book, that I have enjoyed reading.

Each story has its own variation on a dark theme that are creepy enough to provoke thoughts that can make you glance around the room or over your shoulder.

Rayne Hall has the knack of drawing the reader into the story. Her writing style is really good, the stories all have a good flow and pace to them. Each contained enough information to allow me to create images in my own head. The stories are clear and well thought out.

Overall I enjoyed reading these tales and I think that there will be something in here for everyone. As Rayne says at the start of the book:
"Fear is personal. The same story may constrict one person's chest and set their heart racing, yet send only a mild tingle down another reader's spine." (loc 55 kindle)
This book is a good read and I would definitely recommend giving it a shot.

About Rayne Hall-

Rayne Hall writes fantasy and horror fiction, some of it quirky, most of it dark. She is the author of over sixty books in different genres and under different pen names, published by twelve publishers in six countries, translated into several languages. Her short stories have been published in magazines, e-zines and anthologies.

After living in Germany, China, Mongolia and Nepal, she has settled in a small Victorian seaside town in southern England. Rayne holds a college degree in publishing management and a masters degree in creative writing. Over three decades, she has worked in the publishing industry as a trainee, investigative journalist, feature writer, magazine editor, production editor, page designer, concept editor for non-fiction book series, anthology editor, editorial consultant and more. Outside publishing, she worked as a museum guide, apple
picker, tarot reader, adult education teacher, trade fair hostess, translator and belly dancer.

Currently, Rayne Hall writes fantasy and horror fiction and tries to regain the rights to her out-of-print books so she can republish them as e-books.

Her books on the writing craft (Writing Fight Scenes, Writing Scary Scenes, The Word-Loss Diet, Writing Dark Stories, Writing About Villains, Writing Short Stories to Promote Your Novel, Writing About Magic, Twitter for Writers) are bestsellers.

Rayne Hall is the editor of the Ten Tales anthologies:
"Bites: Ten Tales of Vampires"
"Scared: Ten Tales of Horror"
"Haunted: Ten Tales of Ghosts"
"Cutlass: Ten Tales of Pirates"
"Beltane: Ten Tales of Witchcraft"
"Spells: Ten Tales of Magic"
"Undead: Ten Tales of Zombies"
"Seers: Ten Tales of Clairvoyance"
"Dragon: Ten Tales of Fiery Beasts"
"Cogwheels: Ten Tales of Steampunk"
with more titles coming soon.

The stories in her Six Scary Tales series and the Thirty Scary Tales collection are subtle horror: suspenseful, creepy atmospheric, unsettling. Although they contain little violence and gore, they may not be suitable for young readers. Many of these stories have been previously published in other books or magazines.

British English: All Rayne Hall's books use British words, spellings, grammar and punctuation. If you're allergic to British English, avoid them. ;-)

Spotlight: Revolution, Chronicles of the Uprising #3 by Katie Salidas

Chronicles of the Uprising
Book 3

Peace is an illusion. Blood, violence, and death follow Mira like shadows.
Battle lines have been drawn between human and Otherkin, and a bloody war is on the horizon: one that will end in either a shift in the world’s balance of power...or ultimate destruction.

In spite of their strength, powers, and a rage known only by the oppressed, the Otherkin are evenly matched by the superior numbers of the human army. To tip the balance in their favor, the Otherkin need more soldiers – and their only options are the Gladiators of New Haven city.

Mira is sent across enemy lines to recruit any able-bodied vampires to her cause. But what she discovers along the way will blur the lines between friends and enemies. Seeds of doubt weaken Mira’s allegiance, and she finds herself torn between the old masters who used her as entertainment and the new ones who consider her as nothing more than a weapon.

As the war draws near, Mira will have to decide what she is truly fighting for.

Silvery moonlight bled through the sheer curtains above Mira’s head. Cradled in the warmth of the pillowy mattress, Mira could have stayed in bed for all eternity. She could hardly remember a time when she’d been so comfortable. Thirty years in a dirty cell had made her forget the simple comforts of a warm bed and soft clothes. The breeze drifted in, picking up the curtains and sending them lazily dancing. She reached up, letting them tickle her fingertips, and noticed something she’d ever seen before. Well, at least something she hadn’t seen in a very long time. Her hands were clean. Truly clean… and soft. No caked-on blood and grime, or gunk embedded into her nail beds. They even smelled of lemongrass and sandalwood, and were smoother than she’d ever known, thanks to the oils and lotions Stryker had provided her.  This was how things were supposed to be. Life was not supposed to be dirty and ugly. Life was meant to be lived, and small comforts like this enjoyed, not ended by the swift stroke of her sword at the order of her masters. Though she missed the comfortable weight of her weapon, she’d gladly give it up if it meant never having to fight again.
She sighed contentedly and let the squishy mattress hug every inch of her body. This was heaven.
If she could somehow stop time, make the moment last forever, she would. Not being a very devout vampire, Mira still silently prayed – begged really – to the gods for more of this blissful peace. Hope kept the dream alive, but Mira knew the truth. This was only a brief peaceful interlude, one she so desperately needed, but it would be short-lived.
Mira was a warrior. Fighting was her life, try as she might to deny it, and the looming dread of what was to come weighed heavily on her heart.
She should have been up and moving, sunset having long since passed, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away from the window. So many evenings lost. So many missed opportunities to take in the breathtaking majesty of the starlit sky. Thirty years of imprisonment deep underground had robbed her of everything she’d once taken for granted, and now that she was finally able to see and appreciate the twinkling stars, Mira wasn’t wasting one second of it.
In less than forty-eight hours, she’d be back on the road to almost certain death.
She pulled a soft knit blanket up to her shoulders to ward off the slight chill in the air.
Everything comes with a price. Caldera Grove. Beautiful, mystical, and earthy, it promised that longed-for freedom to Mira, and a life free of prejudice. But that did not extend to the humans who’d accompanied her. Lucian, Sarah, and Curtis’s fate depended on Mira. She’d already paid dearly in the struggle for her own freedom, but it had not been enough to ensure her friends’ safety. The price promised to cost her more than she would be able to pay… a trip back to New Haven, behind the Iron Gate.
Hardened warrior as she was, thinking of returning to that dreadful place made her cringe. Silver-coated bars. UV torches. The lightbox. Thirty years spent trying to escape from within those walls. Enduring unbearable tortures and being forced to kill for the entertainment of her masters.
Anger turned to bile in the back of her throat, threatening to sour the peaceful moment she’d been enjoying.
It was best not to think of such things. Live in the moment. Enjoy the comfort. Savor the delectably squishy mattress at her back, and the chilly breeze blowing in. These luxuries deserved to be cherished.
“Mira, are you up?” Lucian’s voice, muffled slightly, penetrated the thick wooden door of the room she was using for sleep. “We’re scheduled to meet with the Council.”
The root of her latest set of problems. The Otherkin Council. Mira grumbled, “Bunch of pompous asses. Self-absorbed and out of touch...” Other choice descriptions came to mind, but name-calling wasn’t going to change the fact that she owed them a debt that had to be paid. And she had to at least make the effort to play nicely until she left the walls of Caldera Grove. She was just as much on their good side as they were hers. But, it was by their good graces she and the humans had been allowed within the boundaries of Caldera Grove, and she had to cooperate, much as it annoyed her to do so.
Lucian must not have heard her grumbling. He knocked on the door and waited a moment before saying, “Mira? Can I come in?”
She wanted to say no. His very presence reminded her of the duty she must perform, and all she wanted to do at that moment was forget her troubles. Heaving a heavy sigh, Mira reluctantly tossed aside her blanket and stood. “Yeah, get in here!”
Lucian pushed the door open but did not step inside. “Making yourself at home, I see.” His mossy eyes spoke more than words about his discomfort and deep-rooted anger.
“Shouldn’t I be as comfortable as possible while I can?” Damn his silent judgment of her. She deserved a little rest and recuperation after all she’d been through. “It’s not often I get to enjoy such luxury.”
She could see the words forming, but Lucian did not speak them. Nothing about this place was luxurious to him, nor was he happy with their situation.
“Have you been mistreated?” she asked, wondering if she’d missed something beyond their hosts’ prejudice.
“Quite the contrary.” Lucian folded his arms and leaned against the doorframe. His posture might have looked relaxed, but she saw past the ruse to the Elite within him, rising to the surface. The pampered prince throwing a temper tantrum, but desperately trying to hide it. “Stryker’s pack has been quite congenial. But we’re quarantined here. Only allowed to leave with your escort. I’d have loved to explore the city.”
“You will in time.” Mira tried to hold back the smirk. Thirty years she’d been imprisoned in a tiny cell, and he was daring to complain to her about having to stay inside the wolf-pack’s large den all day? In some ways, though she dare not admit it out loud, she felt a little vindication seeing Lucian’s discomfort. After all, he had enjoyed his Elite status and all that entailed while she’d spent all those years as a gladiator.
“Yes, of course. I’ll be able to explore after the suicide mission.” Sarcasm made him sound petulant, but she decided best not to call him out on it yet. “Assuming, that is, I make it back in one piece. Speaking of that, we should head to our meeting about our impending death. The Council is waiting.”
“Don’t sound so positive, Lucian. People will think we’ve swapped bodies.”
His eyes narrowed slightly, forming tiny creases at the corners. “Are you not bothered by the fact we are going to die?”
Mira shook her head. Death threats had been her way of life for so long they’d become white noise. Of course she was not ready to die, but there was no point in acknowledging those fears. “Everyone dies eventually. Enjoy the ride and make the trip worthwhile.”

My Review-

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book as part of a blog tour and in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

The blurb i received in the tour invite for Fiendish piqued my curiosity. The idea of a dark, twisted fairy tale was something I couldn't ignore!

Calida has had a rough time she chose to move to Atlanta from Charlotte following a painful break up. She wants to change how she sees herself. Since her break up she hasn't dated or wanted to date. Then she bumps into Seth. Seth is; well; charming, sexy and the all the things dreams are made of, or is he?? Behind his sexy exterior is a predator with some serious skills! Calida's shyness tempts Seth into playing a game where the stakes are incredibly high.

Is Seth still in control? Have the stakes been raised a bit too high? Can Calida become the person she wants to be?

I have loved every page of this book. It has not been a quick or short read, but I have been engrossed in every single page. I love the depth and personalities of these characters.

Calida's willingness to openly trust people and her naivety for me was her biggest downfall. She knew that her relationship with Seth wasn't healthy but she chose to not try to change it. Seth, oh my, he was awesome when he was being nice. He's so sick and twisted underneath. Seth intrigued me, his ability to switch between this almost loving, hot and sexy person into a possessive, dominating, manipulative, evil murderous ass was unreal, it would happen so fast almost like switching a light on. The scenes when Seth was with a "Pet" could be quite disturbing, but those scenes for me made the book so much more appealing, Sorry I can't help it.

The story overall is awesome. This is one of very few dark and twisted books that I have read recently and really enjoyed. This isn't a quick read at over 600 pages, but it is definitely well worth the time. This is the first book by Meka James that I've read and I'm thrilled to have been introduced to her work.

I thought Meka's writing style was really good, everything had flow and continuity. The story doesn't jump or falter. The descriptions give enough information to begin building a vision but leaves out just enough just enough to allow the reader to add more details and keeps you guessing until the end.

I'm not convince that "A Twisted Fairy tale" does this book justice, this is so much more than a fairytale. I will definitely be recommending this book to other people as it is definitely a favourite for me. I am now looking forward to my next encounter with Meka James' work!

This is an awesome book, well written and definitely dark and twisted. A book not for younger reads and not for the feint hearted! 5* all the way!! :)

My 5* Review-

Disclaimer: I received a copy of Second Chance Hero(SCH) in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

In SCH we meet Jenna and Deacon. Jenna and Deacon have been friends since forever, or at least what seems like forever. But one Christmas events take place that changes things and threatens to tear that friendship to pieces.

Jenna is now a city girl, determined and happy. She runs her own cake shops; 2 of them no less, and has her boyfriend; Kip. Deacon, now owns D R & Son Property Development. Deacon isn't short of attention from females, and he has used this to select his "trait girls". This is Deacon's way of dealing with everything that has happened over the years.

But now as Jenna has returns home, hers and Deacon's paths collide once more. Only this time they are both older and should be more aware of their feelings. What will happen this time round? Can the friendship they once had be repaired and restored?

This is the first book by Rebecca that I have read, and I hadn't heard of it until a couple of months ago when I offered to read it. I'm so glad I read it and I can not wait for Rebecca's next book!

Ok SCH...

Wow! No really!! Rebecca has talent. I loved how I was sucked into this story. I could feel the emotion from both Jenna and Deacon, I was completely taken by both these characters. There was more than one time when I could have cried for one or both of these two!

I love how Jenna has come back to Folquay; 5 years later; a city girl but at the same time still remembers her life and feelings before she left. In that 5 years she has grown into a confident young woman with determination. She believes that she knows what she wants too, until...

Since Deacon's father died, Deacon has been running the family business and has been using sex with his "trait girls" as a means of escape. But Deacon has had a rough ride, the night Jenna left Folquay was the night his father died, so Deacon was left feeling as though he had no-one to turn to. But then Jenna walks back into Folquay and back into Deacon's world.

As this is Rebecca's first novel, she has done a fantastic job. Especially as SCH is written in two POV's, but at no point is this confusing. The emotion that Rebecca has put into her writing could be felt throughout the book. There is so much heartbreak, grief and passion! It was practically oozing from my kindle!

Rebecca has also managed to bring the world of Deacon and Jenna to life. I never had a problem visualising any of the details, and I felt as though I was there alongside them!

I reached a point in SCH when I thought maybe; just maybe... but then I found Rebecca's curveball and I was left shouting at my kindle! As much as I love Deacon and Jenna, I did find myself wanting to grab a hold of Jenna every now and then to give her a little slap and tell her to open her eyes! Deacon on the other hand... He had me from the start! I think I may have found myself another book boyfriend (yeah, yeah I know!!) He's such a hottie *sigh*

So overall, I've got to say I loved this book. I can't wait to read Rebecca's next book; Survival. I'm so glad I've had the chance to interact with Rebecca, become a member of her street team, and to have read SCH. I have also had Rebecca on my blog as part of my 1 Year Blogiversary Celebrations; Rebecca's exclusive post can be found here.

If you love romance books and books with a bit of spice then Second Chance Hero is definitely worth giving a chance.

About Rebecca-

Rebecca is a coffee drinking, music loving, working single mother and writing insomniac. When she’s not writing, she’s reading and when she’s not reading she’s squeezing her eyes shut and willing sleep to descend.

She writes about serious issues, giving emotional turmoil a twist and adding a little humour and sarcasm. Her stories are real and relatable, yet unexpected and unpredictable. Every writer was a reader first and Rebecca owes her passion for creating and telling emotional tales to the stories she has read and the people, places and experiences that have, and continue to, inspire her. Rebecca wants her readers to escape to a world where fairy tales and true love exist, wrapping her stories up with angst, passion and curveballs you won't see coming.

Her writing aims to bring problems and tragedies people face every day to light, make them relatable and leave her readers thinking long after they’ve read the last page.
