Reviews: My Forever and Beautifully Broken by Kira Adams

Grief and loss can make a person act out in all the worst kinds of ways. Madalynne Johnson has always been a bit of a handful, but with the loss of her brother, separation of her parents, and her boyfriends unexpected news of joining the army she has gone into a full on tailspin.

Parker Grant experienced loss firsthand when his brother took his own life. Darkness closed in. Madalynne saved him; showed him the light. And even though he isn’t sure what the future holds--he wants Madalynne and this time he won’t give up without a fight.

Madelynne and Parker have known each other for as long as they can remember. After growing up together they begun dating a few years ago. Whilst growing up they have both suffered pain and loss. Parker's brother had committed suicide, and more recently Madelynne's brother was killed whilst serving in the armed forces. So Madelynne is trying to cope with the grief of losing her brother, as well as watching her parents going through a tough phase and looking like they are about to split up.

Madelynne is struggling to deal with all of this and just when it seems like she's handling it better it comes out that Parker has joined the Army and will soon be heading off to basic training. Madelynne is seriously overwhelmed and suggests that whilst Parker is on his basic training that they should have a break; she fears that Parker will end up  like her brother and doesn't know if she can handle that. As Parker heads to basic training, Madelynne heads to Hawaii to stay with family and get her head straight.

However Hawaii holds even more confusion and trials for both Madelynne and Parker. This time it's in the form of Lee. Lee is the complete opposite to Parker, he's unpredictable and a little impulsive. Madelynne feels a strange pull towards him, one that she just can't ignore. So Lee shows Madelynne around Hawaii and they begin spending more and more time together getting to know one another. Could this be the end for Madelynne and Parker?

At the end of Parker's basic training he decides to visit Jacqueline; Jacquline is an online friend that Parker begun talking to help him deal with his brother's suicide. Jacqueline knows everything that Parker has gone through. There's no denying that there is some kind of attraction between them, but for Parker it's not enough, his mind and his heart are set on one girl and one girl only. He heads to Hawaii to go get his girl!

Now with Parker in Hawaii, Madelynne faces a huge decision, the question is who will she pick?? Parker or Lee??

This is my first encounter with Kira Adams, and what a way to start. I loved this book and I was hooked from the start.

Madelynne and Parker are both young and still needing to discover themselves, and as readers we get to share their journey of self discovery.

Madelynne and Parker's story is far from being all rainbows and butterflies, they have to deal with the deaths of their brother's and parental problems too. There are aspects of both Madelynne and Parker's lives that I could relate too. I found it so easy to become engrossed in what was happening to them.

My Forever is packed full of angst, grief, confusion, turmoil and love, all of which are very powerful emotions. Kira has done a fantastic job of capturing and conveying that emotion. The characters are faced with and deal with some very real issues and situations. I think that they handle and cope with them extremely well.

I have enjoyed reading the different POV too. Majority of the book flits between Madelynne and Parker's POV but as Jacqueline and Lee feature more their POV are used too. The introduction of their POV also adds more depth to their characters and makes them seem more realistic. Even though My Forever uses between two and four POV it is at no point confusing, Kira has kept it very clear as to who's POV is being used.

I loved the plot, I'm not a fan of love triangles but I felt that the two intertwining triangles used in My Forever were necessary and they work, they add to the plot. Kira has done an outstanding job at conveying the strength of the emotions that the characters experience, to the point that I too could feel the emotion as if it were my own.

I think that for a debut novel Kira has shown her potential and I think that with each book she will grow from strength to strength. I can't wait to sink my teeth into Beautifully Broken.

Jacqueline Blunt hasn’t had an easy life. In fact, she’s had anything but. From a drug addicted mother to being bounced around in foster care, Jacqueline longed for one thing—normalcy. Lee Bennett had everything he could ever want—girls falling all over him, a dream job, money. The one thing he was missing? Passion.

Sometimes the ones worth fighting for don’t know their worth. Sometimes being broken is beautiful. This is a story of strength, courage, hope, faith, and love. This is Beautifully Broken.

Jacqueline is broken, she's had a rough upbringing. Her mother is a convicted drug addict and her father; who knows! When her mother was arrested Jacqueline was taken into care, she went from foster home to foster home, until she was emancipated at the age of 15. After thinking that things couldn't get any worse she was diagnosed with Bipolar too. For Jacqueline every day is a struggle. Then she meets Lee.

Lee is the complete opposite to Jacqueline, he also seems to have just about everything; money, a job and girls practically throwing themselves at him. But Lee still feels like he's missing something, he's just not satisfied. Lee has suffered heartbreak in the past and as a result has attempted to close off his heart, he thinks that if he doesn't do relationships then he can prevent anymore pain and heartache. Then he meets Jacqueline.

Do opposites really attract? Together can they overcome they're demons and begin healing?

The synopsis for Beautifully Broken called to me. Obviously after reading My Forever I had to read this, but even before I read My Forever I knew I had to read Beautifully Broken. I was intrigued to see if or how Lee and Jacqueline might work, I mean they really are complete opposites, but they seem to bring out the best in each other too.

I have really enjoyed the fact that for these two it wasn't love at first sight, they spent time getting to know one another and built a friendship before attempting to take things further. It was also a change to see that the lead male was showing a more vulnerable side; as Lee kept backing away before realising that he needs Jacqueline.

Lee and Jacqueline's characters grow more and more with each and every bump they hit, there is a lot of give and take throughout. They certainly seem to help one another.

Kira's writing style has once again kept me captivated until the very last page. The emotion that Kira has captured and portrayed is once again wonderful, and is very real. Kira has stick with the use of multiple POV and it works incredibly well, there's never any confusion. The flow of her writing is smooth and all aspects intertwine seamlessly.

Beautifully Broken deals with some very real issues that a lot of people face and live with, I think that Kira has handled these topics fantastically and sensitively. The raw emotion have been captured and portrayed brilliantly, I felt as though I was experiencing them along with Jacqueline and Lee.

Beautifully Broken is a fantastic book full of love, hurt and anger but it also has the power to give hope too! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Beautifully Broken and I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series.

  1. I love My Forever book. Maddy and Parker have known each other since they were little and they have also been in a relationship for over 3 years. Life's toll had challenged not only their lives; but their relationship as well. The loss of both their brothers, Parker's online friend, Maddy's parents arguments and the future.
