Reviews: Look After You Series (so far) by Elena Matthews

Look After You (Look After You #1)

The birth of your firstborn child is supposed to be the best day of your life, a joyous occasion. Well that’s what twenty-eight year old Ava Jacobson thought. That is until her life takes a drastic turn for the worse and her daughter is born three months earlier than planned, weighing only two pounds, two ounces.

A distraught Ava is thrown into the deep end of motherhood and instead of being able to hold her baby like other moms, she has to sit back and watch her daughter fight for her life in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, while her fiancé, Sebastian Gilbert is in the midst of a messy war in Afghanistan. Ava is left to pick up the pieces with the help of her only friend, Caleb Summers.

When her vulnerable state hits an all time low, she finds solace in an unexpected pair of intense green eyes. Eyes that belong to her daughter's doctor, Ashton Bailey, and she falls, like she has never fallen before. However, for the sake of Sebastian she desperately tries to fight against her newfound feelings for Ashton, but eventually the pull between the two is so strong that it is impossible for her to stay away.

Then when Ava is convinced things can't possibly get any worse, a cloud of blackness closes in on her as the secret demons of her past come back to haunt her, with news that will irreversibly shake her entire world forever.

As Ava’s roller coaster ride she calls life begins to circle the drain, she quickly learns that even through the darkness of evil, there is always that one person who will look after you and have the ability to pull you away from the brink of no return, when nobody else can.

Recommended for ages 18+ due to heavy subject matters of rape and suicide. Also includes violence, explicit language and sexual situations.

~My 5* Review~

Disclaimer: I read a paperback copy of Look After You. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Look After You is Ava's story. Ava has just given birth to her premature daughter and now faces the agonizing time of watching her fighting for her life in the hospitals Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Ava's fiancé Sebastian is currently serving in Afghanistan, and her best friend Caleb is on his way. Ava is alone, she fears for her daughter's life and she fears that something might happen to Sebastian too.

Ava spends as much time as she can with her daughter. But still Ava feels alone, vulnerable and worried, yes she has Caleb but she lacks the comfort and love that Sebastian would provide. And then there's the indescribable feeling that Dr. Bailey causes; his touch, his voice, his mere presence causes Ava to react in a way that confuses her.

Ava has no idea what is happening and when she receives news about her sister she is torn between staying with her daughter or heading off to deal with her past, a past that Sebastian knows nothing about. She reaches a decision and that decision has monumental life changing consequences for Ava and everyone in her life.

This is my first encounter with Elena Matthews, and I have to admit that I'm hooked. I will read EVERYTHING this lady writes! I won't hesitate to recommend her books to other readers either.

Anyway I digress slightly!!!

Ava's story is heart warming and heart breaking; you will need tissues. Ava deals with so much at once; her baby is fighting for her life, her fiancé Sebastian serving in Afghanistan, the strange feelings Dr. Bailey causes, her sister's death and the demons that brings; and yet she continues to push through it.

Ava's best friend Caleb is there for her as much as he can be but he still has to work. Then Sebastian gets a short period of leave, but then he has to return to Afghanistan, when he does go Ava breaks down and Dr. Bailey is there to help pick up the pieces.

Dr. Bailey seems to have impeccable timing every time Ava needs someone he's there. He knows that she is with Sebastian but... Then there's Ava's brother, what an absolute...

Yeah I'm leaving those two sentences like that so as not to give too much away!!!

Elena has written an amazing book, with some amazing characters. There's no denying that some parts will cause conflict in opinions, Elena has covered some very real and not pleasant issues but overall I love this book. The style of Elena's writing had me hooked from the start and I knew I needed to read everything. I felt the emotions; my heart ached and broke for certain characters, they're fear was my fear.

I cannot wait to start book 2 Look After Me, I'm itching to immerse myself in Sebastian's life and discover his thoughts and feelings too.

~My 5* Review~

Disclaimer: I received an ARC ecopy in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Oh... My... Gosh...

I read Look After Me straight after reading Look After You. I'm so glad I did. Now I just wish I had book 3!! *stares at Elena* (is it finished yet? how about now?) ;)

In Look After Me we get to see and experience Sebastian's life.

We join Sebastian as he leaves rehab; after falling back into old habits of taking Cocaine. He was hoping cocaine would help him escape the feelings of heartbreak that Ava caused.

Sebastian's counsellor Addison has offered to help Sebastian with his rehab as she understands how he is feeling having been there herself. She gives Sebastian her number and tells him to call if he needs anything.

Sebastian is feeling really weak, low and pretty worthless. He's angry and filled with hate. But he's trying to be a better person, trying to stay clean and get back on track. When he's cleaning out his place he finds a jacket that belongs to his old dealer, as he moves it a bag of coke falls on the floor. Suddenly the cravings increase and Sebastian is both tempted and scared. He calls Addison, she talks him down and says she's on her way over. Sebastian sees a photo of Lily-Mai and finds the courage to dispose of the coke.

This incident sees the start of Sebastian and Addison's friendship. The question is is friendship enough? Will Sebastian learn to open up and let Addison in? Can Addison cope with helping Sebastian to fight his inner demons? Can friendship help to heal the heart?

This book is packed full of so many emotions. As a reader you literally feel every ounce of Sebastian's anger, hurt, betrayal, heartache and hope.

Sebastian grows and develops with each and every page, his weaknesses make him stronger. His personality becomes stronger and as it does he will capture your heart. Addison is amazing, her strength and courage are astonishing, where a lesser person would have walked away she sticks by him, she truly is inspirational.

Sebastion and Addison have a friendship that develops slowly into something more. It was nice to read a relationship that has begun as friends and with openess and honesty from the start.

Elena has done an outstanding job of portraying the feelings of these amazing characters. Elena's writing style is exceptional and her ability to draw the reader in and to make the reader feel the emotions of the characters is second to none!!

I have loved each and every minute of Look After Me and I cannot wait for book 3. (Is it done now??) ;)

It goes without saying that Look After Me recieves a whoping 5* from me!!!

If you are yet to read these book I seriously do recommend getting yourself a copy and some tissues!!!

~About The Author~

Receptionist by day, author by night, Elena Matthews is from Manchester,
United Kingdom, the home of Manchester United, Media city and of course, Coronation Street. When Elena isn’t writing, she can be found with her nose in a book or watching guilty pleasures such as Gossip Girl, developing a rather unusual liking to Chuck Bass. And when she isn’t doing any of those things, you can often find her on Facebook, obsessing over Kellan Kyle, book boyfriend extraordinaire

Elena spent three years of her life at Salford University studying media production, to decide she no longer wanted to pursue a career in the media. Instead, it took her another two and half years to realise her calling. Writing. Now she lives and breathes her writing. She even had to tell her colleagues at work whenever she is found daydreaming at her desk, it’s because she is conversing with her characters.
