Review: Marked, A Twisted Story by Rebecca Sherwin

Title: Marked, A Twisted Story
A standalone Novel
Author: Rebecca Sherwin
Release Date: February 12th, 2016

I couldn't live without pain.

I'd been born into a life of torture and I walked the lonely road of torment, praying for mercy. I was scarred mentally. I was deformed physically. I was mutilated emotionally.

I was a sailor lost at sea, a soul lost in limbo, a shell of a man with no hope.
Until I found her. My fiery-haired, crystal-eyed little one who brought light to a life that knew nothing but darkness.

But she had dark shadows of her own. A past filled with anguish and brutality. A future that promised nothing but the barren life I understood too well.
We were two victims. Two loveless souls searching for something to live for. We were monsters. We were evil. We were doomed.

Our scars ran deep and our grasp on each other depended only on the search for punishment - for the next slice of pain that made us feel alive. We lived for the hurt, we lived for the anger. We lived to mark each other with intensity, belonging, and our own messed up version of recovery.

This isn't a love story. It's a story that cuts. It's a story that captivates. It's a story that questions morals and crosses the line of sanity.

It's a twisted story, one you won't see coming until it's too late...

Please be advised - Marked contains content that some readers may find disturbing.

~My Review~

Disclaimer: I received a free ecopy in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

*** WARNING: This book is not for the feint hearted!! Contains violence, abuse and sexual content from the beginning!!***

This review is long overdue, I finished reading Marked a few of weeks ago. It has taken me this long to put my thoughts and feelings into real coherent sentences and write my review, I was left wordless for a while.

Marked is the story of Benton Wright, and what a story it is!

We join Benton as a child when he was being abused by his father. After the death of his mother Benton and his father move. The abuse Benton suffers continues and gets worse.

One day on the way home from school Benton meets Freddy and they soon become friends. Freddy and his brother teach Benton some boxing. As Benton gets a bit older the abuse from his father gets worse. Until Benton finally snaps, and leaves; yes there s more to this event than I'm letting on!! ;)

Benton heads to London, he is meant to meet up with one of Freddy's brother's contacts who runs a gym, but when Benton arrives he doesn't see anyone waiting for him. So alone and with very little money it looks as though Benton has finally hit rock bottom.

When his money runs out Benton is forced to sleep rough and steal in order to survive. Then he meets Faith. Faith shows Benton a kindness he's seen very little of in his life.

Can Benton find his feet and turn his life back around? Can Benton have a happy ending or is his life too jaded? The easy way to find out is grab a copy, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Firstly this is NOT a happy, easy going romance. Marked is a dark, twisted roller coaster of emotions about a young tortured man who is trying to make it life, or maybe he's just trying to keep afloat and live?!

I don't think that this book contains one single pure good person, I think that they all have varying degrees of twisted darkness in them. There are some who do the right things for the wrong reasons and some that do the wrong things for the right reasons. Which, for me, just adds to the spice! Maybe I'm a little twisted too?

My heart broke for Benton in a big way, several times throughout this book. I wanted things to get better for him, no one should have to endure the things he did; EVER. Rebecca you really are EVIL!! ;) I wanted someone to step in and give him the help he needed as a child, and as a young man I wanted him to find his feet and become better than the monster that raised him.

Reading Marked took me through just about every emotion I know. It even made me want to commit murder. I found Marked compelling, intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable.

The mixture of Rebecca's words and talent coupled with my own imagination took Marked to a level beyond what I could have ever hoped for. When I wasn't reading I found myself thinking about what had happened so far and what I thought might happen. The characters are captivating, realistic and developed more and more as the story unfolded.

Overall... An amazing book. Gritty, dark, emotional, raw and twisted from start to finish. Marked is unlike anything I've read before. Rebecca you've done a fantastic job, and I sometimes worry about the thoughts in your head!! :-D

Again this is not for the feint hearted. Marked contains violence, abuse and sexual content.

I can only give this a HUGE 5* rating!! I highly recommend both Marked and all of Rebecca's other books; I've read them all!! Rebecca truly is one of my favourite authors!
