Reviews: Ready For Flynn Part 1 & 2 by K.L. Shandwick

~~~Ready For Flynn, Part 2~~~
Life for Flynn and Valerie hadn't always been easy. A series of tragedies finally brought them together, and twists of fate made them what they are.
An undeniable love keeps them together, but is young love enough in a world full of temptation?
With Flynn's career on the line can he accept what Valerie proposes?
He knew he could trust her with his heart, but is that the same as believing in her?
He knew she could be persuasive and he wanted to give her the world, but was she ready to take the world on with him?
(A contemporary rock romance 18+)
I knew I’d never love anyone my whole life the way I loved him. I read about once-in-a-lifetime events that happen to a tiny minority of people. Since the day I’d met Flynn, there had been two in my life. One where he slashed a gaping hole in my heart and climbed inside, and one where my heart splintered into a million pieces with the death of my brothers. In the short time Flynn had come back into my life, I’d felt things I never thought I would feel again. A damaged heart that healed in response to his love until it wasn’t afraid to pick up the pace when he stared lustily in my direction. A heart that skipped a beat and fluttered at his touch, then squeezed when he said something to me that showed his vulnerable side.
After reading Ready For Flynn Part 1 I had high hopes for Part 2 and I was not disappointed. Ready For Flynn Part 2 picks up exactly where Part 1 left off. This was a great continuation of Valerie and Flynn's story.
Make no mistake this book is not a fluffy unicorn and rainbows type of book, it is an emotional roller coaster ride! Valerie and Flynn will have you laughing, shouting and crying over and over again. The events that KL Shandwick throws at these two would test even some of the longest standing relationships, let alone one this new! These two have a fantastic chemistry between them, and although they have a fairly new relationship life is not going to be easy on them. With Flynn being in the public eye that adds to the struggles they face, but it's not the toughest thing they face!!
I can't say more on the plot because I don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't read it yet.
Valerie and Flynn have grown into quite the pair of young adults right before our eyes. Flynn comes across as being mature and passionate. Valarie is a mature, savvy, strong willed, intelligent and seriously motivated young woman. All of the characters are great and they play their roles well but for me Valerie is a definite favourite, it's easy to see why Flynn loves her!
KL's writing once more launches you into their world and captures your attention and heart straight away. The story unfolds around you and allows you to experience everything alongside the characters. This time round some of the chapters are told from Flynn's POV so we finally get a glimpse inside his head and heart too. At least now I can understand why Flynn did some of the things he did, as much as I may not have agreed with him, I think it was a case of wrong thing but right reasons!
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Part 2 And now I shall be (im)patiently waiting for part 3 :) *looks at KL expectantly* ;)
My Rating:
~~~~Start your journey with Ready For Flynn, Part 1 here~~~~

At fifteen years old, Valerie Darsin, was loved and cherished by her brothers and boyfriend. Her small town world was happy and secure until a sudden betrayal forced her to flee. Returning home, Valerie found support in Flynn Docherty-a guy who left her with unfamiliar feelings when he disappeared from her life.

Valerie learned to move on, until a life-changing event brought Flynn back, but was she ready?

Has she ever been Ready For Flynn?

Disclaimer: I received a free ecopy in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Ready For Flynn Part 1 is Valerie Darsin's story. Valerie is a girl who has grown up with her brothers and family. She has always been close to her brothers; especially Martin; even though she is younger than them. In turn her brothers have always been protective of Valerie.

Flynn is a friend of Martin's from college. Flynn accompanies Martin to the Darsin's home for Thanksgiving. When Flynn and Valerie meet there is an instant attraction between them, but Martin warns Flynn to stay away as Valerie is only 15. As the time arrives for Martin and Flynn to return to college; Flynn decides to leave a note for Valerie saying when she is ready for him to call him.

After heading back to college life takes Flynn in the direction of fame as his music career takes off. But when tragedy strikes and flips Valerie's world on its head, Valerie calls the only person she thinks she can rely on: Flynn. Flynn drops everything and comes to Valerie's side.

Does Valerie really want Flynn in her life? Can Flynn be trusted? Can Valerie and her life fit in with Flynn's? Will she actually want it to?

Firstly let me start by saying WOW! Seriously what a book. Even though I have a few of KL Shandwick's books this is the first one I've read, *hangs head in shame* :(

This story is packed full of emotion, wit and laugh out loud moments, it will make you laugh, cry and want to throw something at some characters, I know I did!! The attraction between Valerie and Flynn is crystal clear. I admire Flynn for doing the right thing and walking away from Valerie when she was still 15, regardless of his feelings for her.

My heart broke for the characters in this book, I cannot imagine ever having to experience the traumatic event that Valerie did, nor would I wish it upon anyone ever. Valerie tried to face it head on and with the help of Flynn she battles on.

It's not often that I cry when reading a book but the emotion this book is so powerful its palpable. I loved seeing the characters and the story develop and unfold before my eyes. Valerie and Flynn both become more mature with each chapter and Flynn tries to prove to Valerie that although he left he never forgot about her or his feelings for her.

KL Shandwick has a great writing style, her words flow easily on the pages and pull you deep into the story and the lives of all the characters. I found all the characters to be amazing, but especially Valerie. I have loved every page and cannot wait for Part 2.

~About the Author~

K. L. Shandwick started writing after a challenge by a friend when she commented on a book she read. The result of this was "The Everything Trilogy." Her background has been mainly in the health and social care sector in the U.K. She is still currently a freelance or self- employed professional in this field. Her books tend to focus on the relationships of the main characters. Writing is a form of escapism for her and she is just as excited to find out where her characters take her as she is when she reads another author's work.

Review: Smoke and Mirrors by Jess Haines

A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she's just like all the other magi.

A dragon who sees through her lies.
Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.

Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she's got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can't afford at her part time job in a cafĂ©, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.

The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.
As an illusionist, she doesn't have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduatesand legendary treasure hoards are an added bonusshe thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems...

Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight.

Disclaimer: I received a free ecopy from the author in exchange for nothing more than an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entire my own.

Kimberley is at Blackhollow Acedemy and she's trying to get through each class as best as she can using her illusions. But in order for her to pass her graduation she needs a familiar. Kimberley is different to everyone else at Blackhollow; they can all summon a familiar but Kimberley can't, she must find an Other who is willing to let Kimberley bind them to her.

Smoke and Mirrors follows Kimberley's struggle through both school and her quest for an Other to bind. The question is can she find a nd bind the most helpful Other for her: a Dragon?

Smoke and Mirrors is set in the same world as the H&W Investigations series; although it is a completely separate story. It was good to see references to some of the H&W characters!

Kimberley is hard working and down to earth. She is determined not to force an Other to be bound to her. I found it easy to feel Kimberley's emotions, she is a very realistic and likable character. Cormac Hunter on the other hand! Cormac shows a clear distaste for Kimberley at the beginning, but he still agrees to help her. He also decides to try and understand her more along the way, I think he gets a bit more than he bargained for!! ;)

Jess' writing style is amazing as always. It captures your attention and imagination from the get go. I loved the references to a few of the H&W characters (but it wouldn't matter if you haven't read that series, you'd just think it was another background character in this book).

Overall I have loved reading Smoke and Mirrors and I'm looking forward to the next part of the series.

Release Day Review: The Starblood Trilogy by Carmilla Voiez

~Book Info/Synopsis~

Satori, an adept Chaos Magician, casts a spell to try and win back his lost love, Star. Lilith, mother of demons, has other ideas. Summoned by Satori's magic, she makes it her mission to manipulate and separate the doomed lovers.

Satori knows he and Star are meant to be together. He battles demons, travels worlds and even transcends death for her but, however much she begs, he can't grant her the freedom she craves.

The Starblood Trilogy is a tale of sorcery, demonology, murder, sexual obsession and Gothic subculture. In the words of Jef Rouner (Houston Press) "You don't read [Carmilla Voiez's] books. You survive them." and Starblood may be the most brutal female-centred horror of them all. Winner of numerous indie awards, The Starblood Trilogy is being adapted into a series of graphic novels with art by Anna Dmitrieva.

"Carmilla Voiez is more of a singer than a writer. She tells her compelling story in a hypnotic, distinctive voice that brings her eerie world vividly to life." Graham Masterton.

Satori stands in the centre of his bedroom. His fingers and the lace cuffs of his shirt are stained from the charcoal he uses to scribble symbols. Markings cover every surface: the bare floorboards, ceiling and walls. Even his wardrobe and door are covered in intricate black sigils.
He unbuttons his shirt, swearing as he leaves fingerprints on the cotton. After tossing the garment on to his bed, he unzips his jeans, and forces the denim over his legs and to the floor. Standing naked, he smells himself. There is no trace of her scent on his body. Realising this feels like losing her all over again.
His fragile-looking, angular body is lost in the forest of writing. It expands around him, a web of ancient knowledge. The tips of his fingers prickle with energy.

He pulls silver rings from his fingers. Pushing back his shoulder-length hair, he removes the hoops from his left ear, and finally the silver stud from his sharply pointed nose. His jewellery jingles like tiny bells as he lets it fall, scattering like distant stars across the midnight duvet. On his pillow, dozens of photographs lie like fallen leaves. Some are intact but most are torn or defaced. Her face holds his thoughts for a moment: pale, perfect and framed by a mass of ebony curls. He shakes his head to clear her image. After this is over he will make her love him again. Maybe she will beg for his forgiveness. A wolfish grin grows across his face at the thought of Star on her knees, begging him to take her back. He licks his lips. His face feels hot, his body cold. In spite of his impatience to start the ritual, he waits. Sucking deep breaths in through his nostrils, he collects his thoughtshe mustn’t rush. He must be in control of himself and his desires.
Whispering, he draws the same glyphs on his body. He starts with his toes and the soles of his feet, moving upwards and over his skin with practised dexterity. Charcoal drags against his skin, which blossoms pink below each mark. The growing tattoo obscures his features.
Although he knows the words he needs to say, he reads the passage again, to be certain. He draws two circles on the floor and steps into one of them. With the fingers of his right hand he traces a pentagram in the air before him. Then he recites the words, his voice slow and clear, pronouncing each syllable with care.
‘ … This is my will,’ he says finally.

~My Review~
Disclaimer: I received a free ecopy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
The Starblood Trilogy contains Starblood, Psychonauts and Black Sun.
In Starblood we meet Satori and Star. Satori is obsessed with his love for Star, and he decides to use magic to help make her love him back. Satori conjures a demon called Lilith. Lilith enters this world and walks out on Satori to begin creating havoc, starting with murder!
Psychonauts continues where Starblood left off, with Satori searching for Star. Satori is faced with many evils in his search but he is determined to do whatever is necessary to bring star home.
Black Sun sees the end of Satori and Star story. Both of these characters have decisions and choices to make that will cause their lives to change permanently.
I found The Starblood Trilogy to be spellbinding from the first chapter. The relationship between Satori, Star and Lilith is dark and twisted but you get so caught up in it it's easy to see and believe that they're all real.
This is the first time I've read anything by Carmilla Voiez and I'm glad I have recently discovered this talented and dark author! Carmilla's writing style is dark and twisted. She feeds you enough details to pull you but leaves enough to keep you guessing too, it's like a cleverly laid trail of breadcrumbs to keep you going forward.
I really like the characters, I thought they interacted together really well and I loved watching them all grow and develop, they were realistic and believable. I even found that occasionally I was routing for the villians!!
I'd love to write more but I fear I may spoil it for those of you have not yet read this trilogy, so I'll draw my review to a close by saying...
Overall I have really enjoyed reading this trilogy and I'm looking forward to reading more of Carmilla's work.
Thank you to Carmilla for providing me with an ARC ecopy of The Starblood Trilogy.
~About The Author~

Carmilla Voiez is a new voice in the world of horror and dark fantasy. Her

Carmilla lives in North East Scotland and finds inspiration in the wildlife, castles and desolate places that surround her. She lives with her two children, tom cat, and a poet, by the sea.

Carmilla's short stories can be found in a number of anthologies, including Klarissa Dreams. Her first novel "The Ballerina and the Revolutionary" is available for Kindle and in paperback, and her horror classic "The Starblood Trilogy" is being rereleased on May 21 2016. The Starblood Trilogy is currently being reimagined as a graphic novel with art by Anna Dmitrieva, and a complete collection of her short stories is due to follow in 2017.
imagery harks back to the writings of Clive Barker and H P Lovecraft, but her voice is uniquely female. A varied diet of feminism and activism, a deep love of horror and a fascination with the Goth aesthetic created the creature of darkness we find today. Her books are both extraordinarily personal and universally challenging. As Jef Rouner of Houston Press once said - "You do not read her books, you survive them."

Review: Beneath by Kit Tinsley

~Book Info/Synopsis~
Beneath is a terrifying horror novel.

Dan Martin and his family move into a new home. Soon they discover an ancient chamber buried below the house. As the secrets of the area's dark history come to light the family begin to experience frightening supernatural phenomena. Hooded apparitions stalk their garden at night, an unseen hand carves messages on their walls, and most disturbing, their neighbours start to die.

Opening the chamber has released a dark and evil force that existed eons before man. Can Dan Martin, a scientist, accept the existence of the paranormal in order to stop it? Can he protect his family? Violence, horror and death combine in a nerve shredding climax. Will they survive what dwells beneath?

This is the debut novel by English writer Kit Tinsley.

~My Review~
Disclaimer: I purchased a paperback copy of Beneath from the author when I met him at an author signing event in Peterborough in 2015. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
After moving house, Dan and his family are seemingly adjusting and settling in well, they get on well with the neighbours and things are going well. Until the night their dog digs a hole and falls into it.
This hole is no ordinary hole, the hole the dog had begun digging disturbs the ground underneath which gives way and falls into a huge underground chamber. Dan and his neighbour rescue the dog and they put up a makeshift fence.
Since the chamber has been disturbed Dan and hiss family begin to experience strange happenings. Being a scientist Dan tries to rationalise the cause of these goings on but deep down he begins to wonder if there is another cause for them, one he cannot use science to explain.
Can Dan uncover what happened in the chamber? Will uncovering the past help to stop the strange occurrences and keep him and his family safe?
I met Kit at an author signing in Peterborough, UK last year. I had never heard of him at that point but I purchased a copy of Beneath once I saw the cover! I put Beneath on my bookshelf and it has sat there for just over a year, I am so disappointed that I allowed myself too leave it so long before reading it.
Beneath is one of the creepiest books I've read in a long time, and I loved all of it!! I was hooked in just a few pages.
Beneath appears to have quite a few characters but each one plays an important role and they play them well.
The book is written in the first person and is a retrospective first hand account of the things endured by a man driven to the point of breakdown by an ancient and powerful force.
Although haunted house plots are used regularly in the horror genre, I feel the Kit has managed to make it his own, and has made it captivating by telling it retrospectively in Dan's POV.
Kit's writing style definitely makes you want to believe that the things he describes are real. I for one will NOT be going anywhere near a crypt or well for a long time, if ever again!! :)
Never having read anything else by Kit; yet; I cannot say if his writing style has changed or developed. I honestly do think that he has a talent for the horror genre. I'm really looking forward to discovering more of his work.
Overall a great book! If you like horror or creepy books, go on give Beneath a chance, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'd dish out 5*'s but I would have loved just a little more blood and gore.

When Carl first contacted me and asked me if I'd like to review Blood Street I read the synopsis and I was genuinely intrigued with how a story with vampires and the mafia would play out, so I said yes to reviewing it. I was definitely not disappointed!

It has taken me a while to read Blood Street but that's only because life dictated that I couldn't spend as much time reading as I wanted to. That said it hasn't taken away from the reading experience, it actual fact I've now read Blood Street twice!

I think the description given by Carl hits the nail right on the head and fits the book perfectly: "True Blood meets The Sopranos".

Enzo Salerno is the Mob boss and when one his associates winds up dead; gruesomely murdered, Enzo sets his sights on finding the killer and getting vengeance. But as more bodies turn up killed in the same way the FBI is drafted in. It is at this point when an unexpected alliance is formed. FBI Agent Mark Andrews; who has been trying to find a way to take down the Mob boss for a while; winds up working with Enzo in the hopes of catching this gruesome serial killer. As with all serial killers it's not long before the press get a hold of the story and nickname the murderer "The Vampire Killer".

But it couldn't be a vampire, because they don't really exist, do they??

Blood Street is action packed from start to finish. There's blood, gore, unexpected and shaky alliances and vampire lore too. It is a dark and dangerous read. I found Blood Street a great book to read as it portrays a vampire who is a ruthless blood thirsty killer!!

Carl Alves has done an awesome job of creating a realistic world and plot in which as reader I became lost in. I'm glad Carl approached me with a review request. I'm certainly going to be keeping my eyes open for more of his work.

If you like paranormal, horror or fantasy and aren't scared by blood and gore I'd definitely recommend giving Blood Street a chance.
